Design and Motifs

The center is a layered star medallion: a gold and green rosette core, a ring of small stepped blossoms around it, then a wide crown of ivory petal lobes each filled with its own miniature flower spray. A slender pendant drops above and below the medallion, ending in a green and ivory finial. Out of the medallion the field opens into 4 great arabesque spirals, drawn as thin scrolling vines that curl back on themselves in whorls, with palmettes, serrated leaves and boteh paisley forms set in the gaps. Because the ground is not left plain, the eye reads a continuous curvilinear vine system rather than isolated motifs, which is exactly what separates a fine Esfahan drawing from a simplified copy.
