8' x 10'1" Needlepoint Flat Weave Rug | Roman Check Rosette Panels | Olive Green & Burgundy | Made in China

Twenty square panels, 4 across and 5 down, each one holding a single cream rosette on a quartered olive and sage ground: that is the whole architecture of this 8' x 10'1" needlepoint. It is stitched by hand in wool over a cotton canvas with no pile height at all, so the drawing stays razor sharp, the rug lies almost flush with the floor and a door swings over it without catching. The weave is recent, the condition is perfect with nothing worn and nothing restored, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first image is a flat studio photograph, and in it the burgundy lattice and border read slightly pink. The daylight floor photographs are the truer record of the color, where that burgundy is deeper and more rustic. The olive and sage grounds and the beige flowers are the same in both.

Design and Motifs

This is a trellis layout rather than a medallion one. Burgundy bars run the full width and length of the rug, each filled with a running laurel sprig in ivory and wheat, and a small ivory rosette boss sits at all 12 interior points where the bars cross. Every one of the 20 compartments is framed first by a thin apricot outline, then by a row of pale blue and ivory beading, then by a broad ivory band, and inside that frame the ground splits on the diagonal into four triangles, two in deep olive and two in pale sage, so a soft pinwheel sits behind each flower. The rosettes are shaded with real depth, petals curling back around a small burgundy ringed center, and no two repeat exactly: some read as open wild roses, others as tighter chrysanthemum forms with feathered, almost dotted petals. The main border carries the same burgundy ground with laurel sprays and full rosettes at the 4 corners, and the outermost band is a flat check of olive, sage and sand squares that finishes the piece like a ribbon.

Olive Green, Sage and Rustic Burgundy

Three colors do all the work here. The lattice and border are a rustic burgundy, brighter under daylight and closer to wine in a lamp lit room. The compartment grounds alternate between a dry olive green and a paler sage with a grey cast, which is what gives the grid its quiet checkerboard rhythm from across the room. Everything drawn on top of those grounds sits in the beige family, running from chalky ivory through cream to toasted wheat, with thin accents of apricot and a cool pale blue in the beading to keep the neutrals from going flat. For anyone shopping olive green rugs for a room with cream walls, camel leather or dark wood, this is the restrained end of that palette: the burgundy gives the floor a backbone without turning the whole room red.

Chinese Needlepoint in the Aubusson Tradition

Needlepoint floor pieces like this one descend from the French Aubusson and Savonnerie tapestry tradition, and the best modern production comes from workshops in China, where the technique is worked stitch by stitch in wool across a cotton canvas rather than knotted on a loom. The result is a genuine flat weave: an even, dense, pileless surface that holds a drawn line exactly as the designer set it down, which is why paneled formats such as this Roman check are so often specified by decorators and why the beading and laurel read so cleanly here. Among 8x10 Oriental rugs this is one of the easiest surfaces to live with under a dining table, since chairs slide over it instead of digging in, and vacuuming is straightforward with no pile to crush. If you want the background on how the trade separates these pieces from knotted village weaves, our guide to Persian rugs versus Oriental rugs explains the terms.
