9' x 11'8" Needlepoint Rug | Roman Mosaic Panels with Rosette Centers | Brand New, Never Used

A needlepoint flat weave is a different animal from a pile rug: the wool is stitched by hand through a woven canvas, so the surface sits almost flush with the floor and the drawing stays crisp, which is exactly why this Roman Mosaic pattern reads so cleanly across 24 panels. At 9' x 11'8" it covers a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out, and it sits in the practical middle of our 9x12 Oriental rugs group without the weight or bulk of a thick pile piece. It is brand new, never used, in perfect condition, and ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine handmade piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

Two photographs show the rug turned over so you can see the reverse: the pale cotton canvas, the taped hem, the short loose yarn ends and the inventory tag. That is standard needlepoint construction, not damage and not a repair. The face is untouched, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

The field is laid out as a grid of 24 coffered panels, 4 across by 6 down, each one framed by a narrow gold line and a row of small dashed ticks. Inside every panel, 4 triangles meet at the center to form a pinwheel, and over that junction sits a full 8 petal rosette drawn with curled, shaded petals and a tight ringed boss at its heart. The dividing bands between the panels carry a long gold laurel sprig with paired leaves and a slim spear finial, and a small raised rosette marks each intersection where the bands cross, so the eye reads the whole thing as a ceiling coffer or a mosaic pavement rather than a flat repeat. The outer frame steps outward through a plain band, a run of alternating rectangles that behaves like a checkerboard or piano key stripe, and a final solid edge, with a single rosette anchoring each of the 4 corners.

The Olive, Rust and Beige Palette in Detail

Each panel pairs two tones against each other: a deep olive brown on two opposing triangles and a soft beige to warm taupe on the other two, so the pinwheel is created by color alone rather than by an outline. The rosettes are worked in cream, oatmeal and tan with fine brown shading in the petal folds, and a single thin raspberry ring at the center gives each flower a point of focus. The lattice and outer edge are a deep red that leans toward raspberry and burgundy in the photographs rather than a true orange rust, and the laurel sprigs on it are a dry wheat gold. Look closely and you find the quieter accents that keep the scheme from going heavy: pale celadon green and powder blue dashes in the panel guard lines, and a striped outer band that steps through camel, chocolate, sage and bone. Against wood floors and warm upholstery the overall impression is soft and parchment like, with the red reading as the structural color.

Woven in China: Needlepoint Tradition and Quality

This piece was made in China, the country that has carried commercial hand stitched needlepoint production for decades and where the European coffered panel vocabulary of the 18th and 19th century workshops is still drawn and stitched by hand on the canvas rather than printed or machine tufted. Every square of this field represents thousands of individual wool stitches placed one at a time, and the evenness of the panel edges and the shading inside the rosette petals are the two places to judge the work: both are tight and consistent here. Because there is no pile to crush, a needlepoint of this type lies flat under furniture legs, clears a door swing, and holds its drawing in high traffic instead of shading and flattening, which is why it is a favorite of decorators working with formal rooms and antique furniture. If you are weighing it against a knotted piece, our guide to Oriental rug terminology explains how the categories differ and what each construction gives you underfoot.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
