8' x 10'7" French Needlepoint Rug | Ivory & Black Floral Panels | Flat Weave, Perfect Condition
This is a flat needlepoint weave in the French manner, worked entirely in wool over a cotton foundation, and it belongs to a decorating tradition that goes back to the Aubusson and Savonnerie workshops of 18th century France. There is no pile to speak of, which is exactly the point: the surface sits low and smooth, chairs slide over it without catching, and the drawing stays crisp because every stitch is visible. At 8' x 10'7" it is a true room size, well suited to buyers shopping 8x11 area rugs who want something formal without the weight and height of a thick knotted pile. Condition is perfect and the piece has never been used. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials, size and construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
These photographs were taken indoors under warm incandescent lighting, which pushes the ground toward gold and amber. In daylight the field reads as a clean ivory to soft cream, and the border is a true deep black rather than the brown it can appear in the images. The coral, sage and blue grey accents are accurate to the photos.
Design and Motifs
The field is built from a repeating lattice of interlocking ogees and circles, each compartment filled with its own small composition: a spray of coral roses, a spiked 8 petal rosette on black, a quatrefoil of curling leaves, or a tiny checkered square set on the diagonal. Slender scrolling tendrils link one compartment to the next so the eye travels across the whole surface instead of stopping at a central medallion, which is what gives this all over floral design its calm, even rhythm. The border is the showpiece. Rather than a continuous running vine, it is divided into black rectangular panels, each holding a naturalistic bouquet of roses, lilies, tulips and foliage drawn with shading and depth, separated by plain ivory panels quilted with a fine diamond grid. The corners are resolved with full bouquets so the 4 corners read as deliberate compositions, not cut repeats, and a narrow keyed outer stripe finishes the edge.
Ivory Ground Against a Deep Black Border
The palette works on a single strong contrast. The ground is ivory shading into soft cream and light camel, and the weavers have used at least 3 close tones of it to model the tracery so the lattice appears to sit above the background rather than merely be printed on it. Against that pale field the black border panels land with real weight, and the flowers inside them glow the way a bouquet does against a dark wall. The floral accents are coral to salmon red, warm and slightly faded in tone rather than bright, supported by sage and olive greens, a dusty blue grey in the leaves and shading, camel gold in the scrollwork, and small touches of near black in the rosette centers. The overall effect is warm and neutral, which makes it an easy match for wood floors, cream walls and antique furniture, while the black border gives the room a defined edge.
French Design, Chinese Needlepoint Weaving
Needlepoint rugs of this type are made in China, where workshops have specialized in European floral drawing for decades and where the patience required for stitch by stitch work still exists at a level that makes pieces like this possible. The design vocabulary is French, the execution is Chinese, and the result is a handmade Oriental rug that reads as a European antique on the floor. Quality here is judged by stitch count and by how cleanly a curve is drawn: look at the fifth photograph, where the folded corner shows the tight, regular wool stitching and the neatly finished selvage on the reverse. The roses stay round, the leaf points stay sharp, and there is no coarse stepping along the diagonals. Because the weave is flat and dense, it wears well under dining chairs and lies perfectly flat under doors and furniture, and it can just as easily be hung as a wall panel.
