11'2" x 15'4" French Needlepoint Rug | Aubusson Style Fruit Panels | Flat Weave, Perfect Condition
This is a large European needlepoint floor piece worked entirely by hand in wool on a cotton canvas ground, measuring 11'2" x 15'4" and finished with a burgundy bound edge. The surface is flat, with no pile at all, so the drawing reads like a tapestry laid on the floor: 15 framed panels, each holding an oval medallion filled with a still life of fruit and garden flowers. Pieces this large in the French needlepoint tradition are uncommon because every stitch is placed by hand, and at this scale the count runs into the millions. It belongs in the same conversation as other oversized rugs that anchor a full formal room rather than float in it. The rug is in perfect condition, recently made, and ships with a certificate of authenticity from Rugs.net.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Several close-up photographs show soft fold lines running across the field. These are creases from rolled storage on the pallet, not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
The field is divided into a grid of 15 panels, 3 across and 5 down, which makes this an all over design rather than a single medallion layout. Each panel sits inside a scalloped ivory frame outlined with a fine stitched arcade, and at its center is a golden tan oval holding a bouquet: pears, peaches, plums, a split pomegranate, blue and violet grape clusters, and a tall iris rising through the leaves. Garlands of berries and daisies swag around every oval, and where the panel corners meet, small tied sprays of roses and tulips fill the open brown ground. The outer band carries a braided laurel stripe between a gold guard and a plain burgundy selvage, drawn with the same restraint as the panels so nothing competes with the fruit. Each bouquet is stitched slightly differently, which is the clearest evidence of hand work at this scale.
A Warm Caramel Palette With Pastel Fruit Tones
The ground is a warm caramel brown, closer to tobacco than to chocolate, and it shifts gently toward terracotta where the light catches the stitch. Against it the panel ovals glow in golden tan and pale wheat, ringed by ivory and soft blush. The bouquets bring the color: apricot and coral fruit, deep plum and lavender iris petals, dusty violet and slate blue grapes, cream magnolia blossoms, and foliage in olive, sage and moss rather than any bright green. Thin rose pink outlines trace the scalloped frames, and the outer binding is a muted burgundy that grounds the whole field. It is a quiet, aged looking palette with no harsh contrast, which is why it settles easily into rooms with walnut furniture, cream plaster walls or warm limestone floors.
European Needlepoint in the French Tradition
Needlepoint floor pieces follow the French court tradition of Aubusson and Savonnerie, where painted cartoons of fruit baskets, garlands and ribboned panels were translated into wool stitch by stitch. This rug is made that way: wool worked through an open cotton canvas, the reverse showing the regular stitch rows and the cotton tape binding visible in the back photograph. The result is a dense, completely flat fabric with no knot pile, low enough to clear a door and to sit under a dining table where chairs move constantly. Because the pattern is built from counted stitches rather than woven knots, the curves of the ovals and the shading of each pear and plum depend entirely on the stitcher's control of color changes, and here they are handled cleanly across all 15 panels. Recent in age, unused and in perfect condition, it is a formal European piece made for a room that can carry 11'2" x 15'4" of pattern.
