8' x 10' Bamboo Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Star Medallion Design | Brand New, Never Used

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug woven in Turkey with a bamboo silk pile on a cotton foundation, measuring 8' x 10' and drawn in the classic Tabriz star medallion layout. The deep burgundy field is the first thing you notice: the bamboo silk takes light the way reeled silk does, so the red shifts from wine to near black as you walk around it, while the ivory ground surrounding the medallion stays soft and champagne toned. It is a formal, finely drawn piece at one of the most useful sizes in the house, which is why 8x10 rugs in this design sell quickly. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity identifying the weave, the materials and the origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

A faint straight line runs across the medallion and one end border in a couple of the photos. That is a fold shadow from pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. Silky pile shows these creases more readily than wool because of the way it reflects light, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The centre is a large round star medallion built in radiating rings of ivory, sky blue and navy compartments, each one filled with its own palmette, lotus or lattice panel, and the whole disc is scalloped at the edge so it reads like a domed ceiling seen from below. At the exact centre sits a small rosette of pink petals ringed in navy. The medallion floats on an open burgundy ground with no filler, which is what gives the drawing its authority, and the field is closed off by 4 corner spandrels of dense arabesque vine work in ivory, olive green and rose. Small boteh paisley accents and curling cloud band scrolls appear through the ivory surround, visible in the close photographs. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a sky blue main border of navy cartouches and scrolling vine, an ivory meander of pink palmettes on either side of it, narrow brown and ivory geometric guard stripes, and a burgundy outer stripe of winged palmettes that finishes at a small woven cartouche in the end border.

A Burgundy Field Framed in Sky Blue and Ivory

The field is a true burgundy, a cool wine red rather than a tomato or brick red, and the bamboo silk pile makes it behave like velvet: dark and deep from one direction, bright crimson from the other. Around it the ground is ivory warmed toward champagne and pale beige, which keeps the whole rug light rather than heavy. The main border is the counterweight, a clear sky blue set against navy cartouches and navy leaf clusters, so the palette moves red, ivory, blue, ivory, red from the centre out. Olive and sage green carry the vine work, and the flower heads are picked out in rose pink, soft coral, gold, pale turquoise and cream. There is no harsh contrast anywhere; the transitions are handled with outlining in brown and ivory, which is why the drawing stays crisp at arm's length and still reads as one calm colour block from across a room.

Woven in Turkey in the Tabriz Design Tradition

Turkey has been a workshop weaving country for centuries and remains one of the few places still producing fine hand-knotted work on this level of drawing. This piece is a Turkish interpretation of the Tabriz medallion cartoon, and the weaving quality shows in the details that are hard to fake: the curved line of the arabesques does not stagger, the cartouches in the border repeat cleanly, and the back is tight and even with knot nodes small enough to hold the fine outlining you see on the front. The bamboo silk pile is cut low, which is exactly what a design this busy needs, and the long silky fringe is an extension of the warps rather than an applied trim. If you are weighing this against other options, our guide to the difference between Persian and Oriental rug weaving explains where Turkish workshop pieces like this one sit. It has never been on a floor.
