8'7" x 10'9" Wool and Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Design Navy Medallion | Brand New, Never Used

This 8'7" x 10'9" piece is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in the classical Tabriz medallion layout, worked in a wool and silk pile on a cotton foundation. The drawing is dense and disciplined: a navy field packed with small blossoms and feathery leaves, a beige and sage diamond medallion at the center, and deep burgundy quarter medallions anchoring the 4 corners. The silk sits in the flower heads and the vine work, so the surface shifts from matte to bright as you walk around it, which the angled photographs show clearly. It has never been on a floor, the pile is full and unwalked, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a stepped diamond medallion on a beige ground, with a small sage green cartouche and an 8 petal rosette at its core, finished top and bottom with slender burgundy pendants. Around it the field runs all over: rosettes, palmettes, tulip forms, curled acanthus leaves and thin scrolling vines that never repeat in an obvious block. The 4 corner spandrels are drawn in deep burgundy and carry sage heart-shaped cartouches filled with pink and ivory blossoms, framed by heavy arabesque scrollwork. The main border is burgundy with alternating palmettes and vase-like floral cartouches, flanked by sage green minor borders and a bright apricot guard stripe that reads as a warm line of light along the edge. Both ends finish with an ivory kilim panel carrying woven floral bouquets and a thick braided fringe. At 8'7" x 10'9" the medallion centers properly under a seating group, and buyers comparing 8x11 rugs will find this one draws large without crowding.

A Navy Field With Burgundy, Cream and Peach

The field is a true dark navy blue, close to midnight, and it does the work of making every other color read louder. Over it the flowers run in peach, salmon pink, terracotta, soft gold, ivory and light blue, with dark pine green in the leaves, so the field never looks flat or plain. The borders and spandrels shift to a deep burgundy that is almost aubergine in the shadowed photographs and clearly wine red in the flat overhead shot. Between the two, the weaver laid in cream and beige as the resting tones: the medallion ground, the inner border stripes and the kilim end panels. A sage green minor border and a saturated apricot guard band separate the navy field from the burgundy main border, and those 2 narrow lines are what keep the palette from going heavy. Light blue appears in small quantities, mostly in flower centers and leaf tips, and reads as a cool accent against the peach.

Made in China: Weaving and Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in China, where workshops have spent decades weaving classical Tabriz medallion designs to a very high standard. The back, shown in the folded corner photograph, is tight and even, with clean knot rows and no slack, and the design stays crisp at small scale: individual petals, leaf veins and the fine outline around each motif all hold their shape. The wool is springy with good body, the silk is used as highlight rather than filler, and the cotton warps carry a firm braided fringe rather than a machine-finished edge. Among contemporary hand-knotted Oriental rugs, this is the level of drawing and finish that separates a workshop piece from production goods, and at 8'7" x 10'9" in perfect, never used condition it arrives exactly as it left the loom.
