Very few drawings ask more of a weaver than the dome, or gonbadi, layout, and this 8'7" x 11'9" hand-knotted rug carries it end to end without a single wobble in the geometry. The whole field is built as though you were standing under a domed ceiling and looking straight up: a 16 point star medallion at the crown, arched panels falling away from it on all four sides, every arch filled with its own scrolling garden. The pile is wool with silk worked into the outlines and highlights, which is why the ribs of the arches and the petals of the rosettes catch light at a different angle than the ivory ground around them. Design and Motifs

The center is a 16 point star medallion with a blush and tan core, a small pale blue rosette at the exact middle, and alternating burgundy and green wedges radiating out like the ribs of a vault. From that star, long arched panels sweep toward the borders, each one outlined by a narrow stepped stripe that reads almost like brickwork, and each one filled with a separate arrangement of curling vines, palmettes, lotus blossoms and tiny cypress-like sprays. Between the arches sit smaller lobed cartouches and diamond fillers, so there is no dead space anywhere in the field. The border system is just as deliberate: a wide main band on a soft green ground alternates crisp burgundy cross-form medallions with pale rosette cartouches, and it is framed on both sides by floral vine guard stripes and a fine outer meander. Look at the corners in the close-up photos and you will see the main border turning cleanly, with the pattern resolving instead of being cut off, which is the usual tell of a well-drawn cartoon and a weaver who followed it.

Ivory, Sage Green and Burgundy Coloring

The palette is deliberately quiet, which is unusual for a design this busy and is exactly why it works in a real room. The ground of the arched panels is a warm ivory, closer to cream than to white, and the panels between them sit on a muted sage green that shifts toward soft grey depending on the light. Burgundy does the structural work: it fills the star wedges, the border medallions and the narrow ribbed stripes that outline every arch, giving the eye something to follow. Between those three stated colors runs a whole set of secondary tones that only show up close, dusty rose and blush on the rosettes, tan and camel in the vine work, olive and moss in the leaves, and small touches of pale blue in the flower centers. The silk in the pile is used for highlights rather than whole areas, so the blush and ivory passages have a faint sheen while the wool grounds stay matte. Overall it reads as a light, warm neutral rug from standing height with the red and green only registering as you come closer.

Made in India in the Dome Tabriz Tradition

This rug was woven in India, and that is a selling point rather than a caveat. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, with workshops running classical cartoons on cotton foundations at knot counts and finishing standards that hold up to serious comparison. The dome layout itself belongs to the Tabriz drawing tradition, and the weaver here stayed faithful to it: curved arch ribs, a symmetrical star crown, and a field that mirrors perfectly across both axes. What you can judge from the photographs is the weave itself, a tight, even, low-clipped pile that keeps the smallest vine tips and single-knot flower centers legible, plus flat, straight selvages and clean hand-knotted fringe at both ends.
