8' x 10' Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | Beige & Gold All Over Vine Design | New, Never Used
Laid out flat, this 8' x 10' Chobi Ziegler is the kind of rug people call quiet from the doorway and detailed once they kneel down. The field is a warm sandy beige, and the drawing across it is deliberately low contrast: slim vines, small rosettes and shaded palmettes that only separate from the ground when the light moves. It is hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation, never walked on, with a dense even pile and straight selvages, and it sits comfortably in the practical range of 8x10 Oriental rugs that anchor a sofa group or a 6 seat table without crowding the room. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity recording its origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all over design rather than a central medallion: a scrolling vine system that loops back on itself in long curved arcs, dropping lanceolate leaves, 5 petal rosettes and small cross shaped blossoms along the way. Three shaded palmettes run up the center axis, each outlined in apricot gold with a pale rose heart and a brick red tip, and the pattern mirrors left to right so the rug reads correctly from either long side. The main border is a broad gold band filled with alternating palmettes, serrated leaves and tiny hooked sprigs, framed top and bottom by sage green guard stripes of boxed rosettes, the small square cartouche repeat you can see clearly in the close-up photographs. The corner resolutions are drawn cleanly, with the border repeat turning the corner rather than being cut off, which is a sign of a well planned loom drawing.
A Study in Warm Beige, Gold and Sage
The ground is a soft oatmeal beige that shifts toward cream under direct light and toward sand in shadow, with gentle abrash across the width that proves hand-dyed yarn. Against it the designer worked in a tight warm range: honey and apricot gold for the palmettes and border field, a dusty sage green for the two guard stripes and many of the leaves, and a muted greyed brown for the outlining vines so the pattern is drawn without ever going dark. The only saturated note is a brick red, used in small doses for rosette centers, the boxed border figures and the occasional stem tip, and there are quiet touches of pale rose and taupe inside the flower heads. The fringe and the selvage edge stay ivory. The result is a neutral rug that still has color in it, easy against oak, walnut, grey stone or a white painted room.
Peshawar Weaving and Ziegler Tradition
Peshawar, in the northwest of Pakistan, is the center for Chobi and Ziegler weaving, and this piece is a good example of why the group earned its reputation. The Ziegler drawing itself is a 19th century workshop adaptation of central Sultanabad village patterns: the vine scroll was opened up and the palette softened for Western rooms, and weavers have refined that formula ever since. Chobi takes its name from the wood, the walnut husk and plant matter traditionally used to get these mellow golds and greens, and the finish here has that characteristic low sheen rather than a bright one. The wool is a hand-spun highland fleece, clipped to a medium pile, and the back shows a tidy regular knot with no pulled rows, the kind of structure that takes decades of foot traffic. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug, it is new work in an old idiom, made entirely by hand on the loom.
