8' x 12' Modern Oriental Rug | Rust Red with Golden Beige Silk Floral Bursts | Brand New, Never Used

This is a hand-knotted wool and silk floor piece measuring 8' x 12', woven with a cotton foundation and a dense, low clipped pile that lets the silk do the talking. There is no border at all: the rust red field runs edge to edge and the drawing is a single continuous botanical composition of oversized flower heads and trailing leaf vines, placed the way a designer would place them rather than the way a traditional loom pattern repeats. Each flower is outlined with a carved channel so the silk petals sit slightly raised off the wool ground, which is why the pattern reads differently from every angle. The rug is new and has never been on a floor, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece. If you are shopping modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs in a true room size, this is one of the cleaner statements in that group.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The silk in the pile reflects light, so the flowers photograph anywhere from pale ivory to deep champagne gold depending on the angle and the lighting. The first catalogue photo renders the field a little flatter and darker than the floor photos. The wool and silk are a single consistent dye lot, and the shifting tone you see between images is reflection, not variation in color or wear.

Design and Motifs

The field carries roughly a dozen large flower heads scaled far bigger than anything a classical layout would allow, some drawn as open daisy and chrysanthemum bursts with 16 to 20 pointed petals around a solid disc center, others drawn as seed heads where the center is filled with scattered dots and the petals splay out like rays. A handful of blossoms are shown in profile, half closed, as if caught mid bloom, and two of them at the lower end open into broad fan shapes. Linking them is a thin continuous vine that wanders rather than scrolls, hung with pointed leaves and tight buds that face in different directions. There is no medallion, no spandrel, no corner resolution and no border, which means the composition can be cropped by furniture without losing its logic: a sofa or a dining table sits over the field and the flowers still read. Fine incised veining is drawn inside the larger petals and leaves, visible in the close photos as light scoring in the silk.

Rust Red Ground with Golden Beige and Ivory Silk

The ground is a warm rust red, closer to brick and terracotta than to a cool cherry, and it is woven in wool with enough natural abrash in the yarn to keep it from looking printed. Against it the flowers run through a tight family of warm neutrals: golden beige in the largest blossoms, a deeper honey and soft olive gold in the seed heads, and ivory cream in several flowers toward one end of the rug. The vines and buds sit in a quieter wheat tone so they recede behind the flower heads instead of competing with them. Because the petals are silk and the field is wool, the contrast is as much about texture as about color. Viewed with the light the flowers flare almost white gold, and viewed against the light they settle back into bronze and tan, so the rug changes character through the day. It is a confident red that works with walnut and dark oak floors, cream plaster walls, brass, and leather.

Woven in China: Weaving Quality and Construction

This piece was made in China, on a cotton warp, knotted entirely by hand in wool with pure silk reserved for the floral drawing. Chinese workshops built their modern reputation on exactly this kind of work: a clean open field, a disciplined low clip, and silk accents carved in relief so the design has physical depth rather than just outline. The selvedges are tightly overcast, the ends are straight and the back shows even, regular knotting with no pulled rows, which is what keeps a rug this wide lying flat. As an Oriental rug rather than a village weaving, the appeal here is precision: the curves of the vine are smooth, the petal tips are sharp, and the pile has been shorn low enough to hold that detail. At 8' x 12' it belongs with the genuinely large hand-knotted rugs, a size that anchors a full seating group or a 10 seat table with room to pull chairs back.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
