8' x 9'11" Oriental Rug | Black Tabriz Design All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool
A black ground is the hardest thing to pull off in a floral rug, because every flower has to be drawn cleanly enough to read against the dark. This hand-knotted Oriental rug does it, with a densely drawn vine-and-palmette field in rose, ivory and sage set on jet black, framed by a wide ivory main border. It is a workshop piece in wool on a cotton foundation, never used and in perfect condition, and at 8' x 9'11" it sits squarely in the most useful of all 8x10 area rug footprints. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
The field follows the classical Tabriz repertoire: a symmetrical all-over floral lattice built from thin curving vines that split, sweep and reconnect across the whole surface with no central medallion. Sitting on that vine system are open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small cypress-like sprays, with tiny 4 and 5 petal blossoms scattered in the gaps so no part of the black ground is left empty. The drawing mirrors left to right along the long axis, which is why the eye reads the pattern as calm rather than busy. Three borders frame it: a narrow rose guard band of linked flower heads, a wide ivory main border carrying alternating palmettes and rosettes on a meandering vine, and an outer rose band that repeats the guard motif. Fine sage green outlines separate each band, and the corners resolve the border turn cleanly, which is the mark of a properly cartooned design rather than a copied one.
Color: Jet Black, Ivory, Rose and Sage
The field is a deep, even black with no mottling, and because the wool takes light well the pile shifts between charcoal and true black as you walk around it. Against that, the florals run through a warm decorator palette: dusty rose and salmon in the larger palmettes, clean ivory and cream in the rosette centers, soft sage and olive green in the leafwork, with small hits of slate blue, gold and deep burgundy used as accents inside individual flower heads. The main border is a creamy ivory that lifts the whole rug and keeps the black from feeling heavy, and the rose guard stripes tie the border back to the field flowers. Practically, a black ground with ivory framing is a forgiving floor: it anchors a light room, hides traffic, and works with both warm woods and cool greys.
Weaving Origin and Quality
This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that produces fine hand-knotted goods to a cartooned Tabriz drawing. That work is done on upright looms with a cotton warp and weft, knotted entirely by hand, and it is judged by exactly the same criteria as any other fine floor piece: knot density, clarity of the curved line, evenness of the pile and how honestly the corners turn. Here the knot count is high enough to carry hair-thin vine stems and individual petal outlines without them breaking up, the pile is clipped low and level so detail stays sharp, and the selvedges and cotton fringe are finished tidily, as the ruler shot of the reverse shows. The wool pile is springy and lustrous, the kind that compacts under furniture and recovers, so this is a rug built to be lived on rather than admired from the edge.
