7'8" x 10' Chinese Oriental Rug | Tan All Over Floral Design | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a new, never used hand-knotted wool rug woven in China in the classic traditional style, measuring 7'8" x 10' and sitting neatly inside the standard 8x10 area rug footprint that most American living rooms are built around. The field is a warm tan, the main border a deep black, and the drawing is fine enough that individual flower heads, leaf tips and stem shadows read clearly from standing height. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation, not machine made and not tufted, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity from Rugs.net confirming origin, materials and construction.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over repeat built on a soft lattice of scrolling split leaves and slender bars, and inside each compartment sits a single flowering plant drawn from the root up: a tuft of green leaves, a rising stem, and a crown of open roses, carnations and small star blossoms. No two neighboring plants are colored identically, so the repeat reads as a formal garden rather than a stamped pattern. There is no central medallion, which is exactly why this design works under furniture, since the pattern stays consistent wherever a sofa or dining table lands on it. The border system is unusually generous for this size: a wide black main band filled with rosette palmettes, curling acanthus leaves and hooked cartouches, framed by a sage green vine stripe on the inside, an ivory floral guard band on the outside, and thin barber pole and rust outlines that separate every element cleanly. The corners are resolved properly, with the palmettes turning rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a drawn cartoon and a patient weaver.

Color: Warm Tan Field Framed in Black

The ground is a warm camel tan, closer to dry sand than to gold, and it shifts a shade lighter or deeper depending on which way the pile is brushed. Against it the floral work is worked in dusty rose, coral pink, deep brick red and a muted wine, with foliage in sage and olive green and small accents in slate blue and near black that give the bouquets depth. The lattice itself is picked out in a pale mauve taupe with ivory highlights on the leaf edges, a quiet color choice that keeps the structure visible without competing with the flowers. The main border is a true black, deep enough to frame the tan field sharply, and the same rose, green, blue and ivory palette repeats inside it so the border and field belong to each other. Guard stripes in ivory and sage green, plus thin rust red outlines, do the separating. The overall effect is warm and neutral at a distance and genuinely colorful up close, which makes it easy to live with alongside cream walls, dark wood, leather and antique brass.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that produced some of the most carefully drawn traditional floral weavings of the last several decades. The weave is fine and even: the knot nodes on the back sit in tight, regular rows, the pile is clipped low so the drawing stays crisp, and the cotton warps run straight with clean, hand-tied ivory fringe at both ends. Wool pile on a cotton foundation is the right combination for a room this size, because the cotton holds the rug square and flat while the wool takes traffic and keeps its luster. The selvedges are tightly overcast and the sides run true, with no waves or dog legs, which matters on a 10 foot length. It has never been used and has no wear, no repairs and no fading, so a buyer is getting the full life of the pile. Among hand-knotted Oriental rugs in this size class, a piece with this much drawing detail and this clean a finish is a strong value.
