6'7" x 8'3" Chinese Oriental Rug | Coral All-Over Floral Field | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

A brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug in a near square 6'7" x 8'3" format, woven in China with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation. The field is a warm coral, filled edge to edge with a classical all-over floral drawing, and it is held inside a deep navy main border of curling lotus palmettes and vine scroll. The proportions are useful: wider than the usual 6x9, short enough to sit square under a seating group or a squarish dining table without leaving awkward gaps at the corners. Selvedges are tight, the ends are finished with plain ivory cotton fringe, and the pile has never taken foot traffic. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran an all-over floral repeat across the whole field, built on a thin navy lattice that links elongated light blue cartouches, small stepped diamond rosettes and pairs of cream arabesque scrolls that curl back on themselves like ram horns. Every element is mirrored on both axes, so the pattern reads as calm and orderly rather than busy, and the repeat carries right into the corners without being cut off. The main border is the other half of the story: big cream and salmon lotus palmettes with serrated leaves, joined by a continuous vine that alternates with a small blue urn motif, all drawn on navy. Two reciprocal guard stripes, one coral with ivory cloud shapes and one narrow ivory floret band, separate the border from the field and give the whole rug a crisp frame. The close-up photographs show how cleanly the outlines hold, which is the test of a well drawn repeat design.

Coral, Navy and the Blues Between Them

Coral is the main color and it does the heavy lifting, a warm brick red with a soft pink cast that shifts with the light through the day. Against it sits the deep navy of the border and the fine lattice lines, a near indigo blue that makes the field look brighter than it would on its own. Between those two poles the weaver worked a full range of blues: a chalky light blue in the cartouches and hexagonal rosettes, a medium cornflower blue in the smaller diamonds and flower heads, and small dots of true navy at the centers. Salmon and pale peach soften the transitions in the palmettes, while ivory and cream outline the scrollwork and supply the guard stripe. Touches of gold appear in the leaf tips and a few of the border blossoms. The overall effect is a warm traditional palette that sits comfortably with natural oak floors, cream upholstery, leather and brass, exactly as the styled photograph shows.

Woven in China: Construction and Quality

This piece was hand-knotted in a Chinese workshop working in the classical Oriental floral tradition, which is a large and serious part of today's hand-knotted production. Each knot is tied by hand onto a cotton warp, then beaten down and sheared to a 3/8" pile, short enough to keep the fine outlines of the lattice and the palmettes legible and long enough to give the wool a soft hand underfoot. The wool is well spun and takes dye evenly, with no abrash streaking across the coral ground. Woven flat and true, with straight sides and square corners, the rug lies down properly from day one.
