10' x 14' Indian Oriental Rug | Antique All Over Floral Design | New Hand-Knotted Wool

This 10' x 14' rug is a new, never used piece hand-knotted in India from a classical antique drawing, and it is one of those weavings that photographs quietly and then surprises you in person. The wool pile has a dry, slightly waxy sheen that mutes the palette into something that already looks lived with, which is exactly the effect this antique look design is after. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation, not a tufted or machine-made reproduction, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and construction. At 10 feet by 14 feet it covers a full seating group or a long dining table with room to spare, and like every 10x14 Oriental rug we import, it ships free to all 50 states.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a true all over floral design, built on a lattice of thin gold vines that carry large rounded palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split arabesque leaves and tiny budded sprays into every corner of the rug. The drawing repeats in mirrored halves along both axes, so the eye keeps finding the same big blossom rotated and recolored a few feet away, which is what gives an all over pattern its calm. Look closely at the close-up photographs and the detail work is unusually complete: each palmette has an outlined core, a ring of serrated leaves and a dark accent in the center, and the connecting stems are drawn as single continuous lines rather than broken dashes. The main border reverses the scheme with heavy rosette and leaf clusters on a black ground, framed by camel and ivory guard stripes that carry a small running vine with pinpoint dark dots. Corners resolve cleanly, a sign the weavers followed a proper cartoon rather than improvising at the turn.

Color Palette: Sage Beige Field With a Coal Black Border

The ground is a soft beige with a distinct light teal green cast, the kind of greyed sage that reads warm next to oak and cool next to white walls. Against it, the pattern is picked out in saffron and marigold gold, coral pink, terracotta, soft apricot, olive and moss green, with ivory highlights and a few small pale blue notes that only show when you are standing over the rug. Deeper garnet red appears in the heart of many of the flower heads, and black is used sparingly inside the field for outlines and leaf tips. The main border shifts the whole piece onto a coal black ground, which concentrates all that gold and coral and makes the quiet field look lighter than it actually is. Guard stripes in camel, clay rose and antique ivory ease the jump from dark border to pale field. Because the body of the rug sits in the beige and ivory range with multicolor accents, it works with a very wide spread of upholstery without dictating the room.

Origin and Weaving Quality: Made in India

This rug was made in India, and that is a point in its favor rather than a compromise. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the workshops of the north, around Jaipur and Agra, have spent decades mastering the fine curvilinear floral repertoire that this pattern comes from. The back photograph shows an even, tightly packed knot field with straight rows and no slack weft, the foundation is cotton, and the pile is good highland wool that has been clipped low enough to keep the small floral details crisp, which is what makes the fine drawing in the border readable at all. Selvages are firm, the fringe is hand-tied and clean, and the handle is dense without being board stiff. For a piece of this scale, that combination of accurate drawing and honest weave is what separates a decorative floor covering from an Oriental rug you keep for 30 years and then pass on.
