9'1" x 12'5" Modern Oriental Rug | Grass Design Banded Stripes | Aqua & Cobalt Blue, Made in India

This 9'1" x 12'5" piece is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, carrying the workshop reference Design 8609 on the reverse tag. The whole field is blue, drawn as a run of horizontal bands rather than a medallion, so it reads as texture and movement instead of formal pattern. The pile is clipped low and the surface has a ribbed, almost woven-fabric handle, which is exactly what makes the banding visible from across a room. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the wool and the origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The overhead studio shot reads as a deeper and flatter blue than the rug actually is. The close-up images are the honest guide to the palette: pale aqua and sky blue wool worked against cobalt, with small ivory flecks. There is no fading, wear or damage anywhere in the pile.

Design and Motifs

The grass design runs the full width in stacked horizontal registers, each one drawn differently: rows of tall narrow cells like blades or stems, a diamond trellis of tiny lozenges, compact brickwork of dashes and dots, a band of linked loops, and solid ribbed stripes that act as rules between them. Nothing repeats in strict order, so the eye travels up the field band by band. There is no border and no medallion, which keeps this firmly in the modern and contemporary category while borrowing its small geometric vocabulary from older tribal weaving. The drawing sits flush to the edges, finished with a matching blue selvedge and a short blue fringe, and the low clip lets the 4 or 5 different band structures stay legible instead of blurring together.

Color: Aqua, Cobalt and Sky Blue

Everything here is built from one family, which is why it works as one of the easier blue rugs to place. The ground is a bright aqua turquoise that lightens to pale sky blue and near ivory where the wool takes the dye less evenly, and against that sits a hard, saturated cobalt used for the outlines, the dots and the ribbed dividing stripes. The contrast between the two blues is what carries the pattern: cobalt supplies the line work, aqua supplies the light. Seen up close, individual knots alternate pale and deep so the surface shimmers slightly as you cross the room, and a few flecks of violet appear in the darkest bands. Across the full field you can read gentle abrash, the natural tonal drift of hand-dyed wool, rather than any printed uniformity.

Origin and Weaving Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why: a cotton warp and weft, a hand-spun wool pile, and knotting even enough that the horizontal bands hold a true line over 12 feet of length. The reverse shows the grid of knots and the grey cotton wefts clearly, the mark of a rug tied by hand on the loom rather than tufted or machine made. The wool has a dry, slightly crisp handle that suits the low clip and will take traffic in a busy room well. At this scale it belongs with other 9x12 rugs that need to anchor a full seating group, and being brand new and never used, the pile stands at its original height throughout.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
