9'2" x 12'7" Chinese Aubusson Rug | French Urn & Vine Flat Weave | Brand New

This 9'2" x 12'7" rug is a handmade interpretation of the French Aubusson tapestry tradition, worked entirely in wool on a cotton foundation with a low, flat, almost pile-free surface. The whole field sits in one family of neutral coffee and ivory tones, so the drawing reads as raised relief rather than as contrasting color, a look decorators reach for when the floor needs pattern without noise. It is brand new and never used, covers the footprint most buyers shop for as 9x12 area rugs, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine handmade piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

Several photographs show soft horizontal lines running across the field. Those are fold marks from flat pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. A low flat weave like this one relaxes within days once it is laid out, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a borderless all over design built from a broad ogival lattice of scrolling vines that meets at teardrop cartouches filled with tight rosette scrollwork. Inside each compartment sits a classical urn: some lidded and domed like a covered tureen, others footed and fluted with flower sprays rising out of them, each one flanked by long serrated acanthus leaves that spill across the lattice bars. Small 8 petal rosettes and five-lobed blossoms fill the open ground between the stems, and the drawing mirrors left to right so the pattern repeats cleanly along the 12'7" length. Because there is no border, the field runs straight to the selvage, which lets the rug read as continuous fabric under furniture instead of framing a room within a room.

A Tonal Neutral Coffee and Ivory Palette

The ground is a warm neutral coffee, closer to camel and milky tan than to brown, and it shifts gently with the light from wheat in the open field to a deeper caramel where the wool catches at an angle. Every motif is drawn in ivory and cream, with a few brighter chalk-white highlights on the vase bodies and the rosette centers, and the outlines of the acanthus leaves and lattice bars picked out one shade darker in a soft cocoa. That narrow tonal range is the whole point of the piece: it is one of the easiest beige and ivory rugs to live with, sitting quietly with oak and walnut floors, limestone, linen upholstery and warm white walls, and leaving artwork and furniture to carry the color in the room.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops turned out flat tapestry-woven floor coverings for grand interiors from the 17th century onward, and the urn-and-vine vocabulary here comes straight out of that repertoire. This example was woven in China, where workshops have built a long specialty in handmade flat weaves and reproduce the French cartoons with a clean, even beat and very straight lines, as you can see in the tight corner detail and the crisp selvage. The result is a genuine handmade Oriental rug with almost no height to it, which is exactly why this construction ends up under dining tables and in traffic lanes: chairs slide, doors clear it, and the wool surface stays smooth underfoot rather than crushing.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
