9'4" x 11'8" Chinese Needlepoint Rug | French Aubusson Floral Design | Ivory & Black Panel Border

This 9'4" x 11'8" needlepoint rug is a flat woven floor piece worked entirely by hand in the French Aubusson manner, with a dense wool tapestry stitch built over a cotton foundation. The field reads as one continuous lattice of ivory and wheat brown compartments, each filled with roses, rosettes and curling tendrils, and the whole surface is held inside a black border broken into panels of flowers. Because there is no pile to crush or shade, the drawing stays crisp and the rug lies almost flush with the floor, which is exactly why decorators reach for needlepoint under a dining table or a low sofa. At 112 inches by 140 inches it sits squarely among room filling 9x12 Oriental rugs, the condition is perfect, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full overhead photograph was taken under warm studio light, which pushes the ground toward a deep golden brown. The floor photographs taken on the parquet are the accurate reading: the ground is a soft ivory shading into wheat brown, with black borders and pastel florals. Nothing in the first image indicates fade, staining or a different dye lot.

Design and Motifs

Instead of a single central medallion, the designer used a repeating all over lattice drawn from 18th century French floor coverings. Ogival compartments outlined in thin black and brown lines interlock across the field, and where 4 compartments meet, an 8 petal rosette or a small tiled square anchors the junction. Larger 8 point star medallions, worked with black grounds and pale geometric fillers, drop in at measured intervals and give the eye a resting point in what is otherwise a continuous floral carpet of detail. Inside the compartments sit full bouquets of cabbage roses, 5 petal blossoms, buds and feathery acanthus leaves, with long scrolled tendrils in cream and beige linking one unit to the next. The border is the dramatic element: a wide black band cut into rectangular panels, each holding its own bouquet of roses, lilies and leafy sprays, separated by plain ivory dividers with a faint lattice fill. A narrow pale blue and ivory guard stripe runs on both sides of the black band, and the corners resolve cleanly with their own square panels rather than a forced mitre.

Wheat Brown, Ivory and Black Coloring

The ground is the quiet part of the palette, an unbleached ivory that warms into wheat brown through the scrollwork and the tiled fillers, so the field never looks stark white in a room with wood floors. Against that, the flowers are drawn in dusty rose and salmon pink with deeper brick red shading at the petal edges, supported by sage green, olive and a soft moss tone in the foliage. Powder blue appears in small doses, in the little tiled squares, the leaf tips and the guard stripes, and it is the detail that keeps the whole thing from reading as a purely warm beige rug. The black used for the border and the star medallions is a true dense black rather than a faded charcoal, and it does the structural work, throwing the pink and ivory bouquets forward. Buyers who shop our ivory and beige area rugs usually want exactly this balance: a light, neutral floor with enough black and rose in the pattern to hold a formal room together.

Made in China in the French Needlepoint Tradition

Needlepoint is its own branch of the handmade rug trade, and China has been its center for decades. Workshops there specialised in rendering French Aubusson and Savonnerie patterns stitch by stitch in wool, a labor intensive method where every square inch is filled by hand rather than beaten down on a loom, which is why the curved vine work and the shaded rose petals on this piece hold their shape so precisely. The quality markers to look for are the ones visible here: even stitch tension with no puckering, straight borders, honest wool rather than acrylic, and a flat back that lies down without ripples, as the folded corner photograph shows. It is a different animal from a knotted pile piece, and if you are weighing the two it is worth understanding how an Oriental rug is defined before you compare construction. For a formal dining room, a library or a bright sitting room where chairs need to slide and the pattern needs to stay readable, a flat woven needlepoint of this scale is hard to beat.
