9'4" x 13'7" Aubusson Design Oriental Rug | Flat-Weave Floral Medallion | Neutral Beige & Gold

This 9'4" x 13'7" flat-weave rug is worked in the Aubusson manner, the French tapestry tradition of an oval floral medallion floating on an open ground inside a wide plain band. There is no pile to speak of: the wool is woven flat over a cotton foundation, so the rug lies thin and smooth, drapes like a textile and weighs a fraction of what a knotted rug of the same 112" by 163" footprint would. It is an honest used piece with repairs and areas of thinning, priced accordingly, and it still reads beautifully from standing height as a soft wash of beige and camel brown. Among large hand-woven rugs this is the kind of decorative flat weave that works on a floor under a low-traffic seating group or mounted flat on a wall. It ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Condition:

This rug has been used and carries repairs. The close-up photographs show genuine wear: flattened and thinned areas in the corner cartouches and along one inner border, a few small open spots, old reweaving visible from the back, and light stains. The straight pale lines running across the field in several shots are fold creases from storage rather than wear, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally cleaned, steamed and pressed before it ships. We would rather you see all of it now than be surprised later, so please review the detail images and ask us for more if you want them.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is pure 18th century salon: a tall oval wreath sits dead centre, outlined by a thin beaded ring and crowned at top and bottom by a crested shell and acanthus clasp. Inside it, a single loose bouquet of open roses, buds and small five petal blossoms leans slightly to one side, drawn with painterly shading rather than outline. The 4 corners each carry a large scrolled cartouche with curling volutes, feathered leaf sprays and ribbon work, and between them run panels of fluted column striping that mimic carved wood and pleated drapery. Trailing garlands of roses link the corner cartouches to the side panels, and a shallow scalloped guard line runs just inside the broad camel brown outer band, which is left completely plain so the eye settles on the medallion. The whole layout is strictly symmetrical along both axes, which is what makes it sit so calmly in a formal room.

A Neutral Palette of Golden Beige, Camel and Soft Gold

The field is a warm golden beige that shifts between straw and pale honey depending on how the light crosses the flat weave, and it is the reason this piece suits beige and ivory rooms so easily. The outer band steps down into a deeper camel brown, almost tobacco where the weave is densest, and the guard stripes pick up a muted olive and a dusty gold. Within the ornament the palette softens further: the scrollwork is shaded in pale putty, oatmeal and chalky ivory, the leaves are a faded sage and olive green, and the roses carry blush pink and a dull rose madder with tiny dark burgundy centres. A thin cinnamon rust line outlines many of the scrolls and gives the drawing its definition. Nothing here is saturated, so the rug behaves like a neutral and reads as texture and tone instead of pattern from across the room.

Origin and Weaving: Aubusson Design Made in China

This is an Oriental rug made in China, where workshops have specialised for decades in reproducing the French Aubusson and Savonnerie repertoire for Western interiors. The weaving method matters more than the motif here: instead of knotting pile onto the warps, the weaver passes coloured wool wefts back and forth and packs them down, so the colour sits in the structure itself and the curved lines of the roses and volutes have to be built up stitch by stitch in staggered steps. That is slow, patient work on a loom nearly 14 feet long, and it produces the characteristic ribbed surface you can see in the close-up images along with the slight colour striations where one dye lot of beige met the next. Large flat weaves in this design are far less common on the market than knotted rugs of the same size, and the shading quality in the bouquet and the corner cartouches tells you this one came off a capable loom.
