9'5" x 12'1" Persian Vintage Rug | Pastel Light Gray Medallion | 1950s Low Even Pile
This is a 1950s Persian room-size piece that has aged into exactly the palette designers keep asking for: pastel light gray, dry taupe and ivory, with the original blues softened to a whisper. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, it measures 9'5" x 12'1", a generous true room size that sits comfortably in the family of 9x12 Persian rugs while giving you a few extra inches in both directions. Seventy years of honest use have taken the pile down low and even across the whole field, which is what produces the flat, painterly surface you see in the photographs. The rug lies dead flat, the selvages and ends are intact, and the handle is supple rather than brittle. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted and Persian in origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft, ghosted look of the pattern is genuine age patina, not a printed or machine-distressed effect. The pile is low and worn evenly from edge to edge, with no holes, no repairs and no loose areas, and the foundation is stable. Close-up photo 5 shows the knot structure at true scale so you can judge the surface before you buy. The rug is professionally cleaned, steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is classic central Persian workshop: a large lobed medallion on the vertical axis, finished top and bottom with a stepped pendant that reaches almost a third of the way toward each end. Four quarter-medallion spandrels anchor the corners, and the field between them is filled with a dense all-over lattice of curling leaves, small palmettes and rosettes carried on thin vine stems. The detail photograph of the center shows how finely the original cartoon was drawn, with 8 petal rosettes, split-leaf scrolls and brown outline work that survives even where the colored wool has faded. Three borders frame the field: a broad main band of alternating palmettes and leaf forms, flanked by narrow guard stripes of running vine and tiny flower heads. The corner close-up shows the borders turning cleanly, a sign the weaver resolved the corners properly rather than truncating the repeat.
A Pastel Gray Palette with Faded Blue
Color is the whole argument for this rug. The field reads as a pale gray-ivory with a warm sand cast through the center, shifting toward oatmeal and bone where the pile is lowest. The medallion is a shade darker, a mushroom taupe outlined in weathered sea blue, and the same blue survives in the spandrels and along the inner border, where it has muted into a dusty slate that never shouts. Dark brown outlines hold the drawing together and give the pale surface its structure, and there are occasional flecks of rust and olive in the border flowers. The outer guard stripes are the lightest note in the rug, close to a clean ivory. Under lamplight the whole thing warms up toward greige; under daylight it cools toward gray. That neutrality is why a rug like this works against white walls, oak floors, linen upholstery and both modern and traditional furniture.
Persian Origin and 1950s Weaving Quality
Woven in Persia in the 1950s, this piece belongs to the mid-century generation of town workshop weaving: a cotton warp and weft, tightly packed wool knots and a formal medallion cartoon of the kind that central Persian ateliers had been repeating for generations. The back photograph, shown with a 12 inch rule for scale, lets you count the knot rows yourself and see the regular, disciplined weave that separates workshop production from casual village work. A rug of this size took a team of weavers most of a year at the loom. Seven decades of wear have removed the plush, but they have also revealed the quality of the underlying structure, which is the honest way to date an oriental rug: knot, foundation, dye behavior and the way age settles into the wool. It will keep giving service for decades more.
