9'9" x 12'9" Persian Kashan Rug | Raspberry Red Field, Ivory Lobed Medallion | Semi-Antique Wool Pile
A semi-antique city weave in the old central Persian formula, this 9'9" x 12'9" rug is one of the more generous 10x13 Persian Kashan rugs we keep in stock, and the drawing is the reason to own it rather than the scale. The field reads as a deep raspberry red, carrying a lobed ivory and indigo medallion at center, matching indigo pendants above and below it, and dense scrolling florals edge to edge. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, still even underfoot with the low sheen that only comes from years of settling rather than from shearing, and the hand-knotted back shown in the last photo confirms the construction. Every rug leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity, and this one ships free to all 50 states.
Design and Motifs
The composition is a medallion and corner layout drawn over a continuous floral ground, which is harder to resolve than it looks. At the center sits an 8 petal rosette inside a stepped ivory cartouche, held in a dark indigo lobed medallion outlined in a fine olive line. Two indigo pendants extend along the long axis, and four ivory spandrels close the corners of an invisible oval that the vinework quietly describes without any solid outline. Across the field, serrated leaves, curling palmettes, small rosettes and tiny four-petal blossoms run in mirrored pairs, each flower head given its own shading so the ground never flattens into repeat. The main border carries alternating palmettes and rosettes on a vine, framed by stacked guard stripes of blossom-and-leaf meanders, with a slate blue minor border adding a cool break between the indigo band and the red field.
Color Palette in Detail
The field is a dark pink that pulls toward raspberry and cochineal red, cooler and more jewel-like than the brick reds of village weaving, which places it squarely among the collectible red and burgundy Persian rugs. Against it, the borders and medallion are near-black navy indigo, deep enough to read as a frame from across a room while the floral fill inside them stays legible. The accent palette is wide for a Kashan: white ivory in the medallion core and spandrels, a soft powder blue in the central rosette and the minor border, olive and sage green in the leaves and vines, warm camel and brown in the larger palmette heads, and rose pink repeated through the border blossoms. Photographed flat, the red looks saturated and even; photographed at an angle in the showroom, the same wool lightens where the pile leans with the light, which is the natural luster of hand-spun wool rather than any variation in dye.
Kashan Origin and Weaving Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a workshop town since the Safavid court looms, which is why its rugs are drawn to a cartoon with curved, continuous lines instead of the stepped geometry of village work. The local wool is soft and lustrous, takes the cochineal reds and deep indigos well, and holds a tightly clipped 3/8" pile that keeps fine floral detail readable for generations. Kashan is also the most recognizable Persian design in American interiors, so familiar that when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. If you want the full background on how these pieces are drawn, dyed and graded, our Persian Kashan rugs guide covers the town, the workshops and what separates a good one from an ordinary one. This example earns its grade on border accuracy and field density, both of which stay consistent from end to end across nearly 13 feet of weaving.
