9'9" x 15'3" Oversize Indian Rug | Traditional Ivory Field, Camel Medallion | Vegetable Dyed Wool
At 9'9" x 15'3" this is a true room-filling piece, hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation with a 100% wool pile and drawn in the classical north Indian workshop manner. The ivory field carries a single camel rosette medallion, tall stems and serrated leaves rising toward it, and the whole composition is framed by a deep burgundy border that gives the pale ground its weight. Colors are soft and slightly muted in the way vegetable dyed wool usually is, which is exactly why a rug this large does not overwhelm a room. It is in excellent, never used condition, with even pile, straight sides and full hand-tied fringes, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. Buyers working within a fixed footprint should also look at our other oversize hand-knotted rugs, since size is usually the deciding factor at this scale.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The flat overhead photograph was taken under studio lighting and reads cooler, with more green in the field, while the floor photographs were shot indoors under warm light and read softer and pinker. Both are the same rug. The truest reading sits between the two: an ivory to light cream ground with camel and sage drawing and a burgundy border.
Design and Motifs
The layout is a classic single medallion traditional design. At the center sits a scalloped camel rosette filled with curling paisley leaves, small sage rosettes and a tiny rust and ivory flower head at its exact middle, drawn with the kind of lobed outline you see in old Agra and Amritsar workshop pieces. From the medallion the field opens into a balanced, mirrored composition: tall arrow-like stems, serrated palmette leaves, split vine scrolls and small cypress forms that repeat top to bottom and side to side. At each end a shaded camel panel closes the field with a bold zigzag band and a row of small arched motifs, a device that reads almost like a spanning ribbon across the width. Around it all runs a deep burgundy main border of ivory palmettes, hooked geometric brackets and eight petal rosettes, held between narrow guard stripes of small shield shapes and a fine sage outer line. The drawing is steady from one end to the other across all 15'3", which on a rug this long is a fair test of the weaver and the cartoon.
Ivory, Camel and Deep Burgundy
The field is ivory leaning to light cream, with a gentle abrash that lets the ground shift between a cooler, faintly green cast and a warmer parchment tone depending on the light and the direction of the pile. Against it the drawing is worked in several close relatives rather than contrasting colors: sage and olive green in the leaves and vine scrolls, a soft camel and dusty taupe in the medallion and the end panels, pale honey in the stems, and small flickers of terracotta rust in the flower heads and outlines. The main border is the one true dark note, a deep burgundy with a brown undertone that carries ivory and cream palmettes cleanly and pulls the whole rug together visually. Guard stripes repeat the ivory and a faint rust line, so the transition from pale field to dark border happens in stages rather than as a hard edge. This is a quiet, low contrast palette overall, the kind that sits comfortably with oak floors, warm whites, brass and aged leather, and it hides household traffic better than a dark ground rug of the same size.
Woven in India: Workshop Tradition and Weave Quality
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and this rug shows why. It is knotted knot by knot on a cotton warp and weft, with the back photograph showing an even, tightly packed weave and clean, regular rows across the width, plus original hand-tied fringes that are an extension of the warps rather than a sewn-on finish. The wool is a good mountain fleece, dense and springy underfoot with enough lanolin to take the soft dye tones well, and the pile has been sheared to a medium height that keeps the outlines of the leaves and the palmettes crisp. Weavers in the northern Indian workshops have carried the Agra and Amritsar court tradition forward for well over a century, which is why this reads as a serious traditional Oriental rug rather than a decorative copy. Built on a cotton foundation at this scale, it will lie flat, hold its rectangular shape and take decades of use.
