9' x 11'10" Green Gabbeh Rug | Modern Solid Field with Orange Animal Motifs | Brand New

This is a brand new, hand-knotted Gabbeh in a single sweep of green across 9' x 11'10", woven with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and finished with a green overcast selvage. There is no border and no medallion: the whole piece is field, broken only by a handful of small orange animal figures at the two ends and the natural tonal movement of the wool. Up close the pile is soft and dense, and the back shows an even, tightly packed knot structure with no repairs or thin spots. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug, and at this scale it sits comfortably among our modern and contemporary rugs.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The horizontal bands of lighter and deeper green you see in the full-length photographs are a mix of abrash, the natural tonal shift that occurs when hand-spun wool is dyed and woven in separate batches, and soft shadows left from the way the rug was folded on the pallet. They are not wear, not fade and not damage, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The drawing here is deliberately minimal. A Gabbeh is a thick, loosely drawn weaving where the weaver works without a detailed cartoon, and this piece takes that idea to its simplest conclusion: an open, borderless field with nothing competing for attention. The only figures are small orange quadrupeds, roughly 6 along each short end, stepping across the green in a single line with a couple of tiny tally-like marks between them. They read as a quiet signature rather than a pattern, the kind of detail you notice on the second or third look. Everything else is texture: faint vertical striations where the hand-spun yarn shifts shade, and long horizontal passages of deeper and brighter green that act like a brushstroke across the full 142" length. For buyers who want the presence of a hand-knotted Oriental rug without a formal medallion layout, this is the version that works under modern furniture and strong art.

The Green: Olive, Moss and Forest in One Field

Green is the entire story, and it is not one green. The close detail shots show chartreuse and olive yarns sitting directly against moss and deep forest tones, so the field reads bright and almost grassy where the light hits it and nearly bottle green in the shaded passages. Under the overhead showroom lighting the overall impression is a saturated olive green; from a low angle the same pile turns cooler and darker. The two orange animal figures are the only contrast in the rug, a warm rust-orange that is small in scale but deliberately placed against the cool field. The back, visible in the folded corner photograph, carries the same green through the knot heads with a slightly bluer cast. If a strong, confident color is what you are after, this belongs with the saturated green area rugs rather than anything neutral.

Woven in India: Where Good Contemporary Hand-Knotting Happens Now

This rug was made in India, and we say that with confidence rather than apology: India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today, and the Gabbeh weaving workshops there have the loom width, the wool supply and the dyeing control to carry a solid color across 108" without the field falling apart into blotches. That is harder than it sounds, since a plain field hides nothing: every unevenness in the beat-down and every slack knot shows. On this piece the knotting is consistent end to end, the sides are straight, the selvage is tightly overcast and the pile has the weight you want in a room-size rug that will take real traffic. Among hand-knotted 9x12 rugs, a brand new, never used piece in a single bold color is an unusual find.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
