9' x 11'10" Oriental Garden Rug | Soft Beige Diamond Lattice Panels | New Wool Pile, Made in India

This is a brand new hand-knotted wool rug that has been finished to look like it has spent 80 years in a quiet room. The 9' x 11'10" format covers a standard seating group or a table for 8 without crowding the walls, which is why it sits squarely in the most requested group of 9x12 Oriental rugs. The pile is clipped low and the wool has a dry, chalky sheen rather than a glossy one, so the field reads as one soft beige tone from across the room and only breaks into its dusty rose, gold and blue panels when you stand over it. Ends are finished with hand-tied ivory fringe, the back is a clean cotton grid with the knots clearly visible, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The field is a garden plan: a diagonal lattice divides it into roughly 40 diamond compartments, each one filled with its own small flowering spray or a central rosette, so the drawing repeats as a true all-over design with no medallion and no single focal point. Half diamonds and triangles run along all 4 sides where the lattice meets the border, the way a real garden bed is cut by a path. Inside the panels the weavers alternated 8 petal rosettes, serrated leaves, small cypress-like sprays and tiny four-flower clusters, and no two neighboring diamonds carry the same ground color. The main border is wide and generous, carrying upright palmettes and rose blossoms on a scrolling vine, flanked by narrow guard stripes of alternating blossoms and rust leaf buds on a deeper olive-brown ground. The thin outer stripe of coral-red keeps the whole composition from drifting into a single wash of tan.

A Palette of Soft Beige, Dusty Rose and Faded Blue

The ground is a warm sand beige that shifts toward honey and camel where the light rakes across the pile. Against it the panel grounds move through dusty rose, a soft terracotta salmon, muted gold and a toasted cinnamon brown, with a scattering of compartments in a pale faded blue and smoky grey-blue that cool the whole field down. Outlines are drawn in thin coral-red and soft chocolate brown, and the small rosette centers pick up slate blue and ochre. Nothing here is saturated: every color sits 2 or 3 steps below full strength, which is exactly what makes this rug easy to live with next to oak, walnut, linen, cream plaster or grey tile. It is a genuinely neutral floor that still has color in it, which is harder to find than it sounds.

Woven in India to Classic Oriental Standards

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why. It is an Oriental rug in the full sense of the term: hand-knotted row by row on a cotton warp, wool pile, hand-tied fringe, no machine involvement at any stage. Look at the back in the photos and the knot nodes sit in straight, even courses, the selvages are tight and hand-wrapped, and the lattice lines stay true from one end of nearly 12 feet to the other, which is the real test of a loom this wide. The wool is dense enough underfoot to take daily traffic and the low clip means the drawing stays crisp instead of blurring. New, perfect condition, never used, and ready to be the quiet foundation of a room for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
