9' x 11'5" Tibetan Oriental Rug | French Transitional Floral Border | Brown & Taupe | Brand New
This 9' x 11'5" piece is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Tibetan rug woven in soft natural wool, and it is one of the quieter, more sophisticated things we carry. The drawing is French in feeling, an open brown field sprinkled with small beige blossoms inside a wide carved border of acanthus scroll, but the handle is unmistakably Tibetan: heavy, plush, and cut so the pattern sits in low relief. It is the sort of Oriental rug designers reach for when a room already has strong furniture and needs a floor that reads as texture and tone rather than pattern. At 9 feet by 11 feet 5 inches it falls squarely into the 9x12 area rug bracket, large enough to carry a full seating group or a 10 seat table. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, the stated size, material and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over design built from two alternating elements set in staggered rows: an 8 petal rosette with a small round center, and a lighter 4 petal cross flower. They are spaced generously, so the ground stays open and the eye reads the wool before it reads the pattern. A narrow beige outline frames the field and steps inward at all 4 corners with a cusped, bracketed profile, a detail borrowed straight from 18th century French floor design. The main border is the showpiece: broad curling acanthus leaves, thistle heads and open palmettes running on a continuous vine, with a small shield shaped cartouche centered on each of the 4 sides. The leaves are drawn large and carved at the edge, so in raking light the border has genuine depth. Guard stripes are kept plain and the outer edge finishes in solid dark brown, which keeps the whole composition from getting busy.
A Study in Brown, Taupe Gray and Rust
The ground is a deep coffee brown that shifts with the light, cooling toward taupe gray in the open center and warming to chocolate along the edges, with faint tonal striation through the pile that gives the field movement instead of flatness. The field flowers are woven in wheat beige and pale khaki, soft enough to glow rather than contrast. The border is where the color opens up: sand and light beige leaves shaded into olive and muted sage, washed with terracotta rust and copper on the larger scrolls, and touched with a dusty blush pink at the cartouches and leaf tips. Outlines in dark brown hold each shape in place. Nothing is bright, nothing is bleached, and the palette sits comfortably with walnut and oak furniture, cream upholstery, brass and aged leather. If you are working a neutral scheme, this belongs with our brown Oriental rugs.
Tibetan Weaving and Why the Pile Feels Like This
Tibetan weavers work with a loop and cut technique, wrapping the wool continuously around a rod across the warps and then cutting the loops free, which produces a row of knots that is uniform, dense and noticeably springy underfoot. Highland wool is the other half of the story: long staple, high in lanolin, and tough, which is why a Tibetan pile keeps its sheen and resists crushing in a traffic lane. You can see both in the close photographs, a thick even pile on a cotton foundation, with the pattern lightly carved so the motifs stand slightly proud of the ground. The weave is finished with a flat selvage and a tight, tidy edge. In construction and feeling this sits with the best of today's modern and contemporary rugs, a traditional hand-knotted structure carrying a transitional drawing, and at 9' x 11'5" in perfect, never used condition it is ready to go straight down.
