9' x 12'5" Ziegler Chobi Oriental Rug | Beige Field with Faded Rust Florals | Hand-Spun Wool, Brand New
This is a room-size Ziegler Chobi, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the generous, open manner that made the Ziegler style collectible in the first place: large palmettes, long curving vines, and a field of beige and camel gold that lets every motif breathe. At 9' x 12'5" it falls squarely into the most useful of the 9x12 Oriental rugs class, long enough to carry a full seating group or a 8 seat dining table with chairs pulled clear of the edge. The pile is cut low at 1/4", so the drawing stays crisp and the rug lies flat under furniture. It is brand new, never used, in perfect condition, and ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft, faded, almost antique surface you see here is deliberate, not wear and not fading in storage. Chobi Ziegler rugs are given a mild wash after weaving that pulls the brightness out of the dyes so a new rug reads like an old one. The gentle tonal shifts across the beige field come from hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly, and the blurred outlines are drawing rather than damage. Lighting also differs between the overhead photograph and the close-ups, so the field looks warmer and more golden in one and cooler ivory in another. The rug itself is new and in perfect condition, and it is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field carries an all over design built from broad shield palmettes, split leaf forms, 8 petal rosettes and small cross flowers, all strung along thin vines that wander rather than repeat mechanically. Look at the center detail and you can see how the weaver mirrored each pair of motifs across the vertical axis while still letting the leaves change size and lean, which is the quality that separates a well drawn Ziegler from a stiff copy. Three borders frame the field: a narrow brown guard of linked rosettes, a wide main band of palmettes and curling leaves on ivory, and an inner stripe of small blossoms that closes the composition. The corners resolve cleanly, the main band turning into itself without the pattern breaking, which is visible in the corner photographs.
A Washed Beige, Camel and Faded Rust Palette
The ground runs from light ivory through sand to a warm camel gold, shifting in soft horizontal bands where the hand-spun wool absorbed dye at different rates. Over that sit the florals in faded rust and brick, cooled by salmon and dusty pink in the larger palmettes, with quiet sage green filling some of the leaf shapes and a deeper walnut brown holding the outlines and the narrow guard stripes. Nothing in the palette is saturated, and the close-up images show how often two or three of these tones blend inside a single flower. The result is a neutral that still has warmth and depth, which is exactly what buyers are usually after when they search for beige and ivory rugs: a floor that reads calm from standing height and reveals its rust and green detail when you sit down beside it.
Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Tradition
Ziegler is a design tradition rather than a town. The name comes from the 19th century firm that commissioned large scale, open floral carpets in the Sultanabad and Mahal manner for Western rooms, and today the finest revivals of that drawing are woven in and around Peshawar in Pakistan, where Chobi workshops spin their own wool, use subdued dyes and finish the rugs with the antique wash that gives them their faded surface. This piece is a good example of that work: an honest Oriental rug on a firm cotton foundation, with an even hand-knotted back, straight selvages and hand-finished fringe, as the folded corner photograph shows. The wool is lanolin rich and glossy where the light hits it, and the short, dense pile means it will take traffic in a main room for decades.
