9' x 12' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Soltanabad All-Over Floral Design | New, Made in India
This 9' x 12' Jaipur piece is a new, never used weaving in perfect condition, hand-knotted entirely by hand in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the Soltanabad manner: a continuous field of palmettes and curling leafy vine with no central medallion, so the pattern reads the same from every seat in the room. The handle is firm with a dense, close-cropped pile, the kind of weave that holds its drawing crisply under furniture, and the muted beige and camel ground gives it the look of a long-settled antique while the wool is still fresh and full. It is a traditional Oriental rug in the classical sense, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity documenting the size, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over composition: large serrated palmettes and fan-shaped blossoms anchor the lattice, linked by thick scrolling vines and split-leaf acanthus that curl back on themselves in tight hooks. Between the big forms sit small 8 petal rosettes, budding sprays and feathered leaves, all mirrored on both the long and short axes so the drawing repeats cleanly across the 108" width. The main border carries alternating palmettes and leafy vine rosettes on a camel ground, set between 4 narrow guard stripes of meandering vine, and the corners are resolved rather than cut off, which is a mark of a carefully followed design. Buyers who want pattern without a dominating centerpiece tend to look at all-over floral rugs first, and this is a textbook example of the type at room size.
Beige, Olive Green and Rust Palette
The ground is a warm beige that shifts toward light camel and sand depending on how the light crosses the pile, with the field reading paler and creamier straight on and deeper gold at a low angle. Against it the motifs are worked in olive and moss green, mid brown, chestnut and a soft rust, with plum and aubergine outlines giving the palmettes their shape and tiny ivory highlights lifting the centers of the rosettes. The border steps up to a richer camel gold, so the frame holds the lighter field without any hard contrast anywhere in the rug. There is no black, no bright white and no strong primary color: the whole palette sits in the earth tone range, which is why it settles easily with wood floors, cream walls, leather and brass, and why it does not fight existing upholstery.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main centers of fine hand-knotted weaving in India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. That is said plainly: this is a modern Indian weaving, not an antique, and its value is in the quality of execution. The back shows straight, evenly spaced cotton warps and tidy horizontal wefting with no pulls or crowding, the sides are finished with a clean selvage and the ends with a plaited cotton fringe. The wool is well spun and lustrous enough to take the tonal shading the design needs, and the pile is clipped low so the fine outlines of the vine work stay legible. At this format it is a practical dining room or great room size, and it sits among our 9x12 Oriental rugs as one of the quieter, more neutral options.
