9' x 12' Needlepoint Rug | French Aubusson Floral Design | Red and Gold | Perfect Condition
This is a French salon floor translated into wool: a flat-woven needlepoint piece in a true room size, with a tomato red field, an ivory oval center and gold scrollwork crowning both ends. The surface sits almost level with the floor, which is exactly why this style has always been chosen for rooms with heavy furniture, tall doors that clear by a fraction of an inch, and dining chairs that need to slide rather than catch. The drawing is formal and symmetrical, the wool has a soft matte finish rather than a high sheen, and the condition is perfect with no restoration or wear. Among our 9x12 Oriental rugs this one is the quiet formalist of the group, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity recording its size, materials, weave and origin.
Design and Motifs
The composition is built on a single ivory oval medallion at the center, ringed by a beaded guard line and filled with a loose bouquet of roses, buds and slender leaves that spray outward as if just set down. Above and below it, large gold acanthus scrolls curl inward to form a crest, each one anchored by a small urn and flanked by broad leaf fans that bite into the red ground. The field between them carries 4 corner clusters of rose garlands plus trailing floral sprays, all drawn in the curved French manner with no geometric repeats. The border runs ivory with a continuous vine of roses and sage leaves, framed inside and out by narrow gold bands, the outermost one filled with a small repeating egg and bead motif. Because this is a flat weave, the outlines read crisply: there is no pile depth to blur the fine stems and petal edges.
Red and Gold Color Palette
The field is a warm tomato to brick red, bright but not harsh, and it does most of the work in the room. Against it the scrollwork reads as antique gold shading toward wheat and straw, with the lighter passages catching whatever daylight the room has. The medallion and the main border are ivory moving to clotted cream, which keeps the center of the rug visually open rather than closed in. The flowers themselves are the quiet part of the palette: blush pink and apricot roses, pale buttermilk buds, sage and olive green foliage, and a few soft grey blue leaves scattered through the garlands. It is a red rug that behaves politely with cream walls, dark wood, gilt frames and upholstery in green or faded rose. The spec sheet lists this one simply as red and gold, which is the honest headline, though the floral detail adds the softer tones described here.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was made in China, in the needlepoint and flat weave workshops that built their reputation through the 20th century on European floral design, particularly the Aubusson and Savonnerie patterns of 18th century France. That tradition is its own branch of the Oriental rug family: handmade, wool on a cotton foundation, but woven flat so the pattern lives in the weave itself instead of in a clipped pile. Quality in this work is judged by the steadiness of the curved line, the evenness of the ground color across a 12 foot length, and the finish of the selvedges and ends, and all three hold up here under close inspection. The wool is a medium grade with a dry matte handle that suits the pastel shading, and the flat construction makes the rug light to move, easy to vacuum and well suited to a formal room where a thick pile would fight the furniture.
