9' x 12' Tibetan Wool and Silk Rug | Modern Ivory and Gold Floral Trellis | Never Used
This is a brand new, never used 9' x 12' Tibetan rug, hand-knotted with a wool and silk pile on a cotton foundation. The field is a deep ruby red, and across it runs a loose, open lattice of flowering vines carrying large blooms worked almost entirely in silk, so the flowers lift off the wool ground in relief and change tone as you walk around the room. There is no border at all: the pattern simply runs to the selvage, which keeps a piece of this scale from feeling framed in or formal. At 9 feet by 12 feet it is one of the most usable proportions we stock, and it sits squarely in the range buyers search when they look for 9x12 area rugs. The pile is plush and still full height, with no wear, no repairs and no fading anywhere on the rug. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a modern reading of a classical garden field. Thin gold vines curve across the red ground and meet to form soft diamond compartments, and at each junction sits a bloom: broad 8 petal rosettes, layered peony heads, a lotus palmette with a small teardrop heart, and wide sunflower discs with ringed centers divided into petal shapes. Between the large flowers stand upright flowering sprays, slender stems hung with tulip buds and little 5 petal blossoms, each one drawn with the stem rising from a single blossom at the base. The scale of the flower heads shifts across the rug, with the broadest sunflower and peony forms gathered toward one end and the finer sprays dominating the center, which gives this all-over floral design a sense of movement rather than strict repetition. Small curling tendrils fill the quiet spaces so the red never reads as empty. It is a restrained, confident piece of modern and contemporary rug design, decorative without being busy.
Color: Ruby Red with Ivory, Champagne and Gold
The ground is a ruby red that leans brick and terracotta in daylight and deepens toward wine in the corners of the room, with a gentle variation across the width that is natural to hand-dyed wool and gives the field depth instead of a flat painted look. Against it, the flowers are built from a narrow but beautifully judged palette: cool ivory and pale champagne in the outer petals, warm honey gold and apricot in the hearts, soft sand and taupe where the petals turn, and a darker ochre outline that defines every edge. Because those motifs are silk, the same flower can look bleached ivory from one direction and glowing amber from the other, which is exactly what the close photographs show. The vines and tendrils are a quieter antique gold, and the small upright sprays hold the most silver-toned silk on the rug. If red is the anchor color you are building the room around, this piece belongs with the best of our red and burgundy rugs.
Tibetan Weaving and Quality
Tibetan weaving uses its own technique: the yarn is looped continuously around a rod laid across the warps and then cut, which produces a heavier, springier pile than a knot-by-knot weave and makes it possible to carve clean contours between two very different materials. That is the whole point of this rug. The wool ground is sheared slightly lower and holds a matte, velvety surface, while the silk flower heads are left a touch higher and finished with a crisp outline, so the pattern is sculpted as well as colored. You can see it in the folded corner, where the back shows an even, regular hand-knotted grid on a cotton foundation and the silk catches the light at the break. This is the kind of work that defines good contemporary production today, and it is a useful example of why an Oriental rug is judged on weave, wool quality and drawing rather than on age alone. Nothing about this 9' x 12' has been shortcut: full pile, tight selvage, dense handle and a design that holds up at arm's length and underfoot.
