Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over design built on a mirrored lattice of thin scrolling vines. Every junction carries a motif: 8 and 10 petal rosettes with small cartouche centers, split palmettes, half open lotus blossoms, curling saz leaves with serrated edges, and tiny buds that fill the gaps between the larger flowers. The layout is symmetrical along both axes, so the same palmette that anchors the upper quarter reappears inverted below, and a single larger flowerhead sits at the center point where a medallion would normally go. The border system runs 5 bands. The wide main band alternates palmettes with paired leaf brackets, flanked on both sides by narrow floral meanders and then by fine reciprocal guard stripes. One section of the main border breaks for a rounded cartouche holding woven Persian script above a small red star, which is the workshop signature and the detail that separates a signed piece from an anonymous one. Corner resolution is clean, with the border pattern turning the corner correctly rather than simply being cut off.

A Cool Ivory Palette With Green and Navy

The ground is an unbroken ivory, closer to bone than cream, and it stays consistent from one end of the 14'1" length to the other. Against it the drawing is worked almost entirely in blues: deep navy for the outlines and the darkest petal cores, a mid periwinkle for the leaf bodies, and a pale sky blue for the highlights that give the vines their lift. Olive and gold brown supply the warmth, appearing in the flower centers, the stems and the small brackets, while touches of soft teal and a few pinpoint reds keep the palette from reading as a flat blue and white scheme. The main border shifts to a muted sage green ground, a quieter choice than the navy border most Kashans use, and that green picks up the olive already present in the field so the two zones read as one palette rather than two. The narrow guard stripes are pale blue and ivory, which keeps the outer edge light. Under warm light the whole rug leans soft and silvery; under cool light the greens come forward.

Kashan Weaving and Workshop Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and carries the Safavid court workshop tradition forward more directly than almost any other weaving town. The local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why a Kashan pile takes light the way it does and why the color holds its depth over decades.
