Most Persian Kashan rugs arrive in the familiar red and navy formula, so a piece like this one reads as a deliberate departure: an ivory ground worked almost entirely in soft blues, sage and gold, with a weaver's cartouche knotted into the upper border. It measures 10' x 13'11", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile that still stands full and even across the field. The drawing is dense and disciplined, the wool has the quiet sheen Kashan is known for, and the rug is in excellent condition with clean ends and straight sides. Design and Motifs

Beyond the medallion the field runs as a continuous scrolling vine, tying serrated leaves, cypress-like sprays and open blossoms into a balanced all-over rhythm that never repeats too obviously. The main border carries alternating palmettes and rosettes on a soft blue ground, flanked by several narrow guard stripes of meander and tiny flower heads. The woven cartouche visible in the border is the workshop signature, and a signed Kashan of this scale is always a step above anonymous village production.

A Cool Ivory and Soft Blue Palette

The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, which keeps the rug from feeling cold underfoot. Against it the weaver has used at least 4 separate blues: a pale powder blue in the medallion body, a mid periwinkle in the vine work, a deep indigo for outlining, and a muted blue with a sage-green cast that carries the wide main border and the inner frame. Gold and saffron accents sit in the smaller blossoms and give the whole surface a lift, while pinpoints of brick red, soft brown and olive appear in the flower centers. The overall effect is restrained and cool, a palette that sits comfortably with grey upholstery, pale oak floors and painted furniture rather than fighting them. Colors read slightly differently as you cross the room, since the pile direction is what shifts the light on hand-knotted wool.
