10' x 14' Aubusson Rug | Burgundy & Ivory Rose Medallion | Flat Weave Wool, Never Used

A flat weave, no pile Aubusson worked entirely in wool on a cotton foundation, this piece measures a true 10' x 14' and has never been laid in a home. The drawing follows the French salon formula: a wide oval ivory reserve at center, a deep wine burgundy field of shaded acanthus scrolls, and four corner cartouches each holding its own circular rose bouquet. Because there is no pile, the surface sits low and reads almost like a painted tapestry underfoot, which is why this format has always suited formal rooms and heavy furniture. Design and Motifs

The center is an oval ivory reserve outlined in gold and framed by a collar of feathered acanthus leaves that curl outward in caramel and soft brown. Inside it sits a full bouquet: open roses, a large cream peony, tulip buds, small blue star blossoms and trailing leaves, with smaller ribbon-tied sprays set at each end and side of the oval. The burgundy field around it is filled with large volute scrolls and split acanthus, the kind of shaded scrollwork that gives the design its depth, and four heavy floral garlands drape across the field at top, bottom and both sides. Each corner carries a circular cartouche on a pale celadon panel, its ivory roundel holding a rose bouquet and wrapped in a wreath of acanthus with a palmette anchor beneath. The ivory main border runs a continuous garland of roses, magnolias and buds, and a plain rust brown outer band closes the whole composition. It is a symmetrical, classically French layout with 4 matching corners and no borrowed geometry anywhere in it.

A Wine Burgundy Field Against Ivory and Rose

The field is a deep wine burgundy, shaded within itself so the scrollwork reads as a lighter claret against a darker claret rather than as an outlined drawing. Against that, the central oval and the wide border are a warm ivory that leans cream rather than white. The flowers carry the color range: pale blush pink, dusty rose and a deeper raspberry in the rose heads, cream and off-white in the peonies and magnolias, small powder blue and grey blue blossoms scattered through the sprays, and foliage in muted olive, sage and khaki green rather than anything bright. Gold and caramel run through the acanthus collar and the cartouche wreaths, while the corner panels sit on a quiet celadon grey that cools the composition where it meets the border. The outermost band is a solid rust brown, and the same rust appears in the thin guard stripes. Nothing here is loud. The whole palette is the faded, powdery Aubusson range that works with antique furniture, gilt frames and dark wood floors.

Woven in China in the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson began as a French tapestry town, and its flat woven floor coverings became the standard for European salons from the 18th century onward. Today the best hand woven work in that tradition comes out of Chinese ateliers, where weavers build the design weft by weft on a cotton warp with no knots and no pile at all. The folded corner photographs show exactly that: a smooth tapestry face, dovetailed color joins, and the loose weft tails left on the reverse where one color hands off to the next, which is the honest signature of a genuine hand woven flat weave rather than a machine product. The weave is tight and even across all 10 feet of width, the outlines stay crisp through the tightest scroll curls, and the selvages are clean and straight. As an Oriental rug in the flat weave family, it is low profile enough to clear a door swing, easy to slide a dining chair across, and light for its size compared with a thick pile piece of the same dimensions.
