11'8" x 15' Antique Chinese Art Deco Rug | Taupe Field, Indigo Bird Border | Central Vase Motif
There is nothing timid about an 11'8" x 15' rug that leaves most of its field empty. This antique Chinese Art Deco piece runs a full 15 feet of taupe wool from end to end, interrupted only by a single vase still life near the center and a loose scattering of flowering sprays, then wraps all of it in a deep indigo border. The wool is thick, glossy and long stapled, shifting from pale camel to warm coffee depending on where you stand, and the pile has settled into the soft, slightly silvery surface that only real age gives a rug. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and at this scale it sits in the small group of genuine oversize Oriental rugs large enough to anchor a great room without the furniture floating.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Several close photographs of the open field show soft diagonal shadows and faint fold lines. Those come from the rug being rolled and stored flat on a pallet, and they are not wear, not fading and not damage. The pile relaxes and the field evens out once the rug is laid flat in a room, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The drawing here is deliberate restraint. At the center sits a small still life: a tall indigo baluster vase on a stand, holding prunus and peony branches, set beside a low celadon topped tray with a single star flower rising from it. Around that center, a ring of blossom sprays is spaced across the field, each one a short dark branch carrying blue peonies, pale gold rosettes and a few pointed leaves, placed so the eye keeps moving over the empty wool instead of settling. The border does the heavy work. A wide indigo band carries long tailed birds perched among flowering vines at the corners, tall vases and incense stands at the midpoints of each side, and scattered insects, star blossoms and rosettes filling the ground between them. A narrow celadon and ivory guard separates that band from the field, and a second slim navy outer band with a running vine finishes the edge. Ivory fringe runs at both ends.
A Taupe Field Framed in Deep Indigo
The field is a true taupe: mushroom brown with a warm camel undertone and a rose cast in raking light, never grey and never orange. Because it is woven in one open sweep, the natural variation in the dye lot reads across the surface as gentle banding, lighter toward the center where the light catches the nap and deeper toward the ends. Against that, the border is a saturated indigo navy, dark enough at the outer edge to look almost black in the photographs and lifting to a clear midnight blue where the pile turns. The drawing inside the border is picked out in a full blue range, from pale sky and turquoise leaves to nearly black peonies, with pale gold and buttery ivory blossoms, soft celadon green foliage and a few apricot accents in the bird motifs. The celadon guard stripe is the hinge between the two halves of the palette, cool enough to hold the navy back and warm enough to belong to the taupe. Brown and blue with gold is a forgiving scheme, and it sits comfortably with walnut, brass, leather and off white walls.
Chinese Weaving and the Art Deco Style
Art Deco rugs of this type came out of the northern Chinese workshops that supplied American and European interiors in the early decades of the last century, taking the old Peking vocabulary of vases, prunus branches and long tailed birds and setting it loose on a wide open ground. The weaving is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a thick, high sheen wool pile, clipped a little deeper than most Persian city work and often sculpted slightly around the outlines, which is why the motifs stand proud of the field. An open ground at this size is harder to weave than a busy one, since every irregularity in spinning, dyeing or beat down shows; this field stayed even. The folded corner photograph shows the tight, closed back and the neat selvedge you want on a piece of this period, and the pile depth confirms it was kept and used carefully.
