14'2" x 19'2" Oversize Persian Heriz Rug | Camel Medallion on Dark Royal Blue | Excellent Condition

At 14'2" x 19'2" this is a true palace piece, a hand-knotted Persian Heriz built on a purpose-made loom and carried all the way through without the drawing ever losing its balance. The field is a deep, slightly abrashed dark royal blue, the 8 point ivory star medallion sits dead center, and camel arabesques fan out to coral red corner spandrels and a navy main border. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, heavy in the hand, with full pile and even color across all 230 inches of length. Condition is excellent. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity, and rugs of this weight, which normally carry a freight surcharge anywhere else, ship free to all 50 states. If you are shopping oversize Persian rugs for a great room, a double height living room or a long formal dining space, this is the size that is genuinely hard to find.

Design and Motifs

The center is an 8 point ivory star medallion holding a rust red rosette with a small ivory octagon at its core, ringed by tulips, carnations and serrated leaves drawn in blue, olive and brown. From the medallion, thick camel arabesques sweep outward in mirrored pairs, each scroll flowering into small cobalt rosettes and ivory cartouches, and terminating north and south in a lobed camel pendant with an orange center and a pair of navy cloud band devices. The 4 corner spandrels break to coral red and fill with blue palmettes, curling vines and ivory bird-like leaf forms, a softer and more flowing treatment than the strictly angular village drawing most buyers associate with this geometric Persian rug tradition. The navy main border runs a classic turtle palmette and rosette sequence, with coral cartouches and pale celadon shields at the intervals, framed inside and out by salmon pink guard stripes checkered in brown, ivory and blue, then a final camel outer stripe.

The Dark Royal Blue, Coral Red and Green Palette

The field blue is the anchor: a deep royal navy with a faint horizontal abrash that moves in daylight and keeps a field this large from reading flat. Against it, the coral red of the spandrels is warm and almost brick-toned, brighter where the pile catches light and settling to a soft terracotta in the border cartouches. The camel and ochre of the arabesque system is the third structural color, a honeyed gold-brown that photographs closer to bronze in the corner shots. Green appears in two registers, a clear olive in the leaves and a paler sage in the small border shields, and both keep the red and blue from tipping into a purely patriotic scheme. Ivory and cream carry the medallion ground and the small rosette heads, cobalt blue flickers through the vines, and a salmon pink guard stripe runs the full perimeter as a quiet transition. It is a balanced, mid-tone palette rather than a dark one, and it will hold up against oak floors, walnut furniture and cream walls equally well.

Heriz Weaving and the Quality of This Piece

Heriz is a cluster of weaving villages east of Tabriz, on the slopes below Mount Sabalan, and the district owes its reputation to two things: mineral-rich water that gives the local fleece an unusual toughness, and a drawing style built on straight lines, stepped corners and bold medallions that can be read from across a room. Ordinary village Heriz work is coarse by city standards, which makes a piece like this one notable, since the vine work, the small cobalt rosettes and the fine ivory outlining in the medallion demand a tighter weave than the district normally attempts. The back shows clean, regular knotting on a cotton foundation with the heavy double wefting that gives Heriz its board-like body, the selvages are firm, and the ends are secured with the original ivory fringe. Weaving 14'2" x 19'2" also means a loom and a weaving team committed to a single rug for years, which is why oversize Heriz rugs in this condition surface so rarely.
