4'4" x 6'10" Chinese Tapestry Rug | Fall Scenery Verdure Landscape | Flat Weave, No Pile
This 4'4" x 6'10" hand-woven tapestry is a picture rather than a pattern: a wooded river valley in autumn, worked entirely as a flat weave with no pile, in the European verdure tradition that Chinese tapestry workshops have carried on for decades. Because the weave is weft-faced and thin, the piece behaves more like a woven panel than a floor rug, which is why most owners hang it on a wall where the drawing reads at eye level, although it can also be used flat in a low traffic room. It is a recent weaving in perfect condition, and every piece we ship travels with our certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine handmade Oriental rug, hand-woven and not machine made.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The horizontal lines you can see across the field in several photos are fold marks from flat storage on the pallet. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. Because this is a thin flat weave, the creases relax once the piece is laid out or hung, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The composition is built like a stage set. Two heavy old trees anchor the left and right edges, their branches arching across the top so the foliage frames the open sky in the middle. Between them the ground falls away to a stream, where a long wooden trestle bridge crosses the water on slender posts and 2 wading birds, a tall light heron and a smaller bird with blue wing feathers, face each other on the near bank. To the right sits a stone cottage with a thatched roof and a mill race pouring white water past its wall, with a second roof tucked behind it in the trees. Behind all of it, in pale washed tones, a walled town with towers, a dome and a church spire sits on the far side of the river, and a single small bird perches in the leaves of the upper branches, the kind of detail you only find after living with the piece for a while. The border is narrow and deliberately quiet: a rust outer band, then an ivory chain of small ringed rosettes, then a wide band of golden acanthus leaves and lance shapes, so that nothing competes with the landscape inside.
A True Autumn Palette
The color story is autumn seen in soft light rather than bright postcard fall. The sky and distance are a warm ivory that shades toward pale oatmeal and the faintest grey, which is what gives the scene its sense of depth. The foliage is layered in at least 5 greens, from a deep blackish spruce in the shadowed clumps through mid olive and sage to a dusty grey green on the willow leaves, and the turning trees in the center are drawn in golden yellow, wheat and ochre. The ground and the tree trunks run through tan, fawn, cinnamon and a cocoa brown, while the stream and the mill water are picked out in pale blue, silver grey and cream. Small accents of coral and brick red appear in the flowers near the cottage and in the wing of the perched bird. The border lifts the whole thing with rust, terracotta and butter gold against a muted mauve brown ground, so the warm tones of the frame echo the autumn tones of the field without repeating them.
Origin and Weaving Quality
Made in China, this panel comes out of the workshop tradition that supplies most of the world's hand-woven verdure tapestries today, weaving the classic European landscape cartoons with modern dye control and very even tension. The technique is tapestry flat weave: no knots and no pile, with the wool weft packed over a cotton warp and the color changes worked by hand area by area, which is why the leaves can be shaded one tone into the next and the distant town can be drawn in nothing but tints of ivory. That kind of free shading is far harder in a tapestry than in a knotted rug, and the close-up photographs show how cleanly the outlines of the bridge posts and the cottage brickwork hold. The back is flat and tidy, the ends are finished with a plain woven band, and the whole piece is light enough for one person to handle and hang. It sits comfortably among our other hand-woven Oriental rugs as the one piece meant to be looked at rather than walked on.
