5'2" x 6'8" Chinese Tapestry Rug | Verdure Landscape Scenery | Flat Woven Wall Hanging

This hand-woven tapestry is a verdure landscape in the old French manner: a leafy clearing framed by tall trees, a shallow stream running across the foot of the composition, a domed villa standing among gardens on the left, and a hazy hilltop town fading into the distance on the right. It is woven flat, with no pile at all, so the drawing reads like a painting on cloth rather than like a floor rug, and the piece works best hung on a wall, where the light catches the hatched greens. At 5'2" x 6'8" it falls into the genuinely useful 5x7 Oriental rugs band: broad enough to hold the wall above a sofa, a bed or a long console, and still compact enough to frame or stretch. It ships with our certificate of authenticity recording the exact size, the materials, the weave and the country of origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

Three of the images are macro close-ups taken from a few inches away, so the individual wefts look far coarser there than the piece does in person. The plain ivory panel in the final photograph is the cotton backing stitched to the reverse to support hanging, not a flaw, a repair or an unwoven area.

Design and Motifs

The composition is built like a stage set. Two heavy trunks rise at the left and right edges and their branches meet overhead to form a canopy of small lance shaped leaves, leaving an open view through the middle of the field. Perched on a branch at the upper left is a long tailed bird with an ivory breast and a deep red wing, drawn in enough detail that you can read its eye and beak. Below it the foreground fills with broad palmate leaves, spiky fan shaped plants, peony and rose blossoms, a fallen trunk lying across the bank, river stones, reeds, and a ribbon of pale water. Behind the foliage on the left sits a villa with a balustraded upper storey, shuttered windows, a domed tower with a finial and a low arcade stepping down toward the garden. The right half opens onto distant hills with a second settlement and ruined arches sketched in soft tones to suggest depth. The border is a continuous garland of roses and leaves on a cream ground, caught at the 4 corners by a scrolling rosette cartouche, and the whole panel is finished with a flat charcoal navy outer band that acts like a frame.

A Study in Greens

Green carries the entire piece, but it is never one green. The upper canopy runs from blue leaning teal and deep forest on the shaded leaves to olive, moss and dusty sage where the light falls, with occasional near black leaves used to punch out depth. The foreground plants shift into brighter grass and celadon, and the weaver blends between tones by hatching narrow bands of one color into another, the technique that gives tapestry its painterly gradients. Behind all of it the sky and open middle distance are a flat ivory with the faintest green cast, which is what makes the foliage read as silhouette. The warm notes are deliberate and sparing: soft rose and salmon on the peonies and border roses, a clear red on the bird's wing and on a handful of border buds, terracotta on the villa roof, and chocolate to tan on the trunks and fallen timber. The stream is a muted pale blue with grey shadows among the stones. The outer band of charcoal navy is the only strong dark in the piece and it contains everything inside it, which is why this reads as a calm, faded, antique looking panel rather than a bright one. If you are furnishing around it, our green Oriental rugs sit naturally alongside it.

Woven in China in the Verdure Tradition

This panel was made in China, where tapestry workshops have spent decades reproducing the verdure and landscape cartoons of the classic French ateliers, and they do it well. Tapestry is a different discipline from pile weaving: there is no knot and no clipped surface, so the wool weft is packed over the hidden warp and the picture is built color by color, each area woven as its own small block and joined to its neighbour. Every leaf edge, every roof line and every bird feather has to be plotted in advance from a painted cartoon, which is why a scene this dense takes so long and why a coarse weave would collapse the drawing entirely. The weave here is fine and even, the lines stay crisp at the close range of the detail photographs, and the back is clean and tidy under its cotton lining. It is a recent piece in perfect condition, with no fading, no restoration and no wear, and it is a good illustration of why the broader term Oriental rug covers far more ground than most buyers expect.
