6' x 8'5" French Tapestry Rug | 17th Century Verdure Reproduction | Flat-Woven Pictorial Landscape
This is a handmade flat tapestry, not a pile rug, and it reads as a picture the moment you stand over it: a wooded park in pale ivory and faded green, with two figures in rose robes at the upper right, a cottage tucked into the middle distance, birds and blossoming branches scattered through the trees. It measures 6' x 8'5", which places it in the same footprint as our 6x9 rug size range, small enough to hang on a wall and substantial enough to lay in front of a sofa. The weave is flat and supple with no pile to crush, the wool is fine and tightly packed, and the design follows the 17th century French verdure tapestries that lined chateau walls. Every piece we ship carries a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft vertical line down the centre of the flat-lay photographs is a fold mark from folded storage. It is not wear, not fade and not damage, and it relaxes once the piece is laid flat or hung. Every item is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous landscape with no medallion and no repeat, drawn the way a painter would compose it. Heavy oak and acanthus foliage fills the left and lower thirds, rendered in layered clusters of cream, olive and slate blue, while the centre opens into hazy distance so the eye travels back into the scene. A figure in a plumed hat stands beside a seated woman in a deep rose gown at the upper right, a long-tailed bird crosses the upper field, a swan and a small dog sit in the lower right quarter, and a pink-walled cottage with a red roof appears through the trees on the right side. The border is a single narrow salmon band carrying a running vine of leaves and open roses, closed on both sides by a plain sage guard stripe and finished with a dark flat selvage and short fringe. That single slim border is deliberate: on a pictorial tapestry the frame stays quiet so the scene inside it does the talking.
A Faded Verdure Palette in Ivory, Sage and Rose
The palette is the whole point of a verdure tapestry and this one is unusually soft. The ground shifts between ivory, bone and a warm sand tone, with broad passages of pale sage and celadon green through the foliage and the distant hills. Salmon and apricot run through the tree trunks, the border band and the roof of the cottage. Accents arrive in small doses and carry real saturation against the pale ground: raspberry rose on the seated figure's gown, magenta in the border blossoms, periwinkle and lavender in the leaf clusters, deep plum and near-black olive in the shaded branches, and a few strokes of gold. Nothing is bright, nothing fights, and the overall effect is the gently sun-bleached look collectors chase in older European tapestry work. Listed as multi-colored rugs go, it is one of the quietest, and it sits easily against limestone, oak, linen or painted plaster.
French Tapestry Weaving and the Verdure Tradition
French verdure tapestry, the Aubusson tradition above all, built its reputation in the 17th century on exactly this subject: dense green woodland, a glimpse of architecture, a hunting party or a courtly pair set among the trees. The technique is flat tapestry weave, where the weaver builds the image weft by weft on a cotton warp rather than knotting a pile, which is why the drawing can hold curved outlines, shaded foliage and recognisable faces at this scale. Look closely at the detail photographs and you can see the fine ribbed structure of the weave and the colour changes worked in short passages to model light across a tree trunk. This is a recent piece in perfect condition, made to the old cartoon and never used, so it can be hung as a wall panel, laid as a flat floor covering in a low traffic room, or stretched and framed as a picture.
