5' x 5'2" Square Tapestry Rug | 17th Century French Pictorial Garden Scene | Wool & Silk Flat Weave

Measuring 5' x 5'2", the panel is hand-woven as a flat tapestry in wool with silk worked into the highlights, reproducing a 17th century French garden scene of four maidens moving through a wooded clearing while a winged cherub leans out of the branches above them. Behind the figures the weaver has built a full landscape: layered oak and fruit tree foliage, a sloping bank of grasses and wildflowers, a pale sky and a low hill fading into the distance. The scene is framed by a slim brown guard line and then a wide camel ground border filled with a continuous garland of roses, tulips, buds, ribbon-like leaves and blue acanthus scrollwork at the 4 corners. A plain dark brown outer band finishes all 4 sides and gives the panel the look of a framed painting.

A Painterly Palette of Gold, Ivory and Soft Blue

Color here is handled in gradations rather than blocks. The robes are the loudest voices in the piece: warm golden yellow shaded up to pale butter and down to honey, one gown in slate and powder blue with white lights along the folds, and flashes of rose pink and deep raspberry where an underskirt turns. Skin tones move from cream to peach to a soft brick shadow, and the silk in those passages catches the light so the figures appear to lift off the ground. The landscape runs through sage, olive and deep forest green with blue-black leaf clusters, all set against an ivory sky and tan earth. The border shifts the whole thing warmer, a camel field carrying coral, pink, straw yellow and slate blue flowers. The dark brown outer band anchors the palette and keeps the multi color field from feeling busy.
