6' x 6'6" Chinese Tapestry Rug | Verdure Landscape Scenery | Flat Tapestry Weave Wall Hanging
This is a woven picture, not a pattern. Worked entirely by hand in a flat tapestry weave with no pile at all, the 6' x 6'6" panel reads like a painting: a wooded river valley, two figures in classical drapery beside the water, a third resting under the far bank, and a distant village under a snow-dusted peak. The near-square format and the heavy navy outer edge, with hanging loops stitched along the reverse as shown in the final photograph, mean it works equally well mounted on a wall or laid on the floor of a quiet room. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine handmade piece, and as an Oriental rug in the broad sense it sits comfortably beside traditional and antique furnishings.
Design and Motifs
The composition follows the verdure tradition: tall trees at the left and right act as a proscenium, their trunks and branching canopies framing an open middle distance of water, cascades and a hilltop settlement below a mountain. In the foreground a seated figure in coral and cream drapery rests among broad leaved plants on the left, while a standing figure to the right of centre raises one hand toward the stream, and a small reclining figure with a basket occupies the far bank. Ducks and ripples are drawn into the water, rocks and mossy banks build the foreground, and the whole scene is closed by a narrow ivory line, a slim gold fillet and a wide garland border of full blown roses, buds and leaves. A thin ochre outline and a plain navy band finish the outer edge on all 4 sides.
A Palette Built on Greens
Greens carry the picture and they are not one green but many: deep forest and pine in the shaded canopies, blue tinged teal in the mid-ground foliage, olive and sage across the middle ground, and pale yellow green where light catches the upper leaves. Against them the weaver sets a warm ochre and gold for sunlit branches, taupe and chocolate brown for the earth and tree trunks, and a soft ivory to pearl grey for the open sky and the distant snow. The figures bring the only strong accents, coral and rose pink drapery that pulls the eye to the foreground, echoed by scattered coral blossoms in the garland border where ivory and cream roses dominate. The navy outer band anchors the whole palette, and buyers browsing green rugs will find few pieces with this much tonal range in one field.
Woven in China in the Verdure Tapestry Tradition
Made in China by workshops that specialise in the flat tapestry technique of the 18th century European verdure panels, this piece is woven weft face on a cotton warp so that the image, rather than any pile, is the entire surface. That technique is unforgiving: every shift of tone has to be hatched stitch by stitch, and the quality of a tapestry is judged by how convincingly foliage, water and cloth read from a few steps back. Here the leaf clusters hold individual shapes, the water shows movement, and the faces and hands of the figures are drawn small and still legible, which takes a very fine weft count. Recent in age and in perfect, never used condition, it is a decorative textile made to the same demands as the antique originals it follows.
