6' x 7' Scenery Tapestry Rug | Green Verdure Landscape with Figures | Flatwoven Wall Hanging
This is a picture woven in wool rather than a floor covering in the usual sense. Measuring 6' x 7', it is a flat tapestry panel with no pile at all, so the image reads with the clarity of a painting: a wooded foreground of oversized leaves, a sunlit clearing where figures in period dress gather, and blue hills with a village and a church spire receding into an ivory sky. The weave is thin and even, finished with a teal bound edge, which makes the piece light enough to hang on a wall yet substantial enough to lay down in a low-traffic room. Condition is perfect, with crisp drawing and unfaded color throughout, and every piece we ship carries our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The composition follows the classic verdure formula: a curtain of broad foliage across the bottom two thirds, pierced by a clearing where the narrative sits. In that clearing, more than a dozen small figures stand and converse on an apricot ground, one in a striped doublet and red hose, women in long pleated skirts, with further figures and a farmstead set further back on the green hillside. Behind them the drawing opens into layered trees, tiled rooftops and a ridge of blue hills. The surround is built in 3 bands: a narrow guard of interlocking ribbon loops, a wide field of fruiting branches and leaves, and an inner guard repeating the ribbon motif. The 4 corners and the side panels carry their own vignettes, including a chariot pulled through the leaves, a reclining figure among vines, and draped urns with hanging garlands. There is no medallion and no repeat, which is exactly the point: every square inch of this panel shows something different.
A Study in Greens, Salmon and Teal
Green carries the whole piece, but it is never one green. The foreground leaves run from near black forest and pine through moss, sage and a silvery blue green, with pale celadon used for the leaf edges so each frond separates from the one behind it. The middle distance softens into olive and hay yellow, and the far hills shift to a dusty slate blue under a cream sky. Against all that cool foliage the border reads warm: a soft salmon and blush pink ground with coral tracery and small teal leaf accents, which lifts the panel and keeps it from going dark on a wall. The clearing itself is a muted apricot, and the figures add quiet notes of oxblood red, ivory, charcoal and faded rose. A deep teal binding runs around all 4 sides and frames the pastel palette the way a mount frames a watercolor.
Woven in China in the Verdure Tapestry Tradition
This panel was made in China, where workshops have long reproduced European verdure and pictorial tapestry cartoons by hand on the loom. It is a true tapestry structure: the wool wefts are packed by hand over a cotton warp and turned back where one color meets the next, so the picture is built color by color rather than knotted row by row. That technique is slow and unforgiving, because shading a hillside or a face means blending wefts rather than relying on a thick pile to hide the joins, and the detail visible in the figures and the distant rooftops shows how carefully it was handled here. As an Oriental rug in the broad sense, it sits apart from the knotted weaves most buyers know, and it is best enjoyed hung flat on a wall, where the light moves across the wool and the scene can be read from across the room.
