4'9" x 6'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Wool and Silk Floral Medallion | 60 Raj Approx. 400 KPSI | Unused
This is a workshop-grade 4'9" x 6'7" Tabriz woven in the 2000s and never put on a floor, so the pile still stands full height and the ivory ground has not picked up a trace of traffic. The pile is wool with silk worked into the highlights, which is why the small blossoms and the vine tips in the photos catch light differently from the wool around them, and at roughly 60 Raj the drawing stays tight enough to resolve a flower head barely wider than a fingernail. It sits in the easiest size in the house to place, the same footprint buyers shop when they browse 5x7 Persian and Oriental rugs, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knot count.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a layered medallion built outward from an 8 petal rosette: a dark core, a ring of coral and green petals, then a scalloped collar of tiny ivory and blue blossoms, then a wider frame of coral palmettes and cartouche-shaped lobes that reads almost like a star when you step back. From there the field opens into a full all-over arabesque, pale green and light blue vines curling in long S-shapes, each one ending in a split lily, a tulip, a cluster of small carnations or a shaded leaf. Four corner spandrels answer the medallion in the same vocabulary rather than repeating it exactly, and scattered through the ivory ground are single buds and cloud-like fragments that keep the open areas from ever looking blank. The border system runs five bands deep: a wide coral main border of alternating lilies and palmettes, flanked by narrow ivory stripes of linked rosettes and a thin blue-grey guard, with the corners properly resolved so the pattern turns rather than stops.
Ivory, Coral and Soft Garden Pastels
The field is a warm ivory with a faint buttery cast in the center, the kind of ground that makes a room feel wider, and it belongs with the softest of the ivory and beige Persian rugs rather than a stark white. Against it the main border is a light coral, a dusty salmon rose that sits between terracotta and pink depending on the light in the room. The drawing is carried by two cool tones: a light sage to apple green in the vines and leaves, and a powder light blue in the petals, the outer petal fans and the thin guard stripe. Accents sit in a deeper rose and a brown-black outline that gives every flower a drawn edge, with small lavender and clear white notes in the medallion collar and the lily throats. There is no navy and no strong red anywhere in the rug, so the whole palette stays quiet and daylight-friendly, and the silk highlights read as a pale sheen rather than a color of their own.
Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, with designers, dyers and weavers working to a drawn cartoon rather than from memory. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 inches: 40 Raj is commercial work, 50 Raj is fine, and 60 Raj, around 400 knots per square inch, is where a workshop is weaving for collectors rather than for volume. You can see what that buys in the close-up photos, where a curved vine stays genuinely curved instead of stepping, and in the back and fringe shot, where the knot rows are straight, even and tight on a cotton foundation with hand-finished selvages. Rugs of this grade are usually clipped short so the pattern stays legible, and this one has the low, dense, slightly crisp handle that Tabriz is known for, which is also why it will hold its drawing under furniture for decades.
