True squares are the hardest shape to find in fine Persian weaving, and this 6'6" x 6'6" Tabriz is a workshop piece that was drawn for the format rather than cut down to it. The ivory field carries an eight point star medallion dead center, the corner resolution is symmetrical on all 4 sides, and the wool and silk pile is knotted at roughly 400 knots per square inch (60 Raj), which is the grade where Tabriz drawing stops being approximate and starts being exact. Woven in the 2000's and never laid in a home, the pile still stands full and the silk still flashes when the light moves across it. Design and Motifs

The center is a layered star medallion: a navy rosette core set inside a taupe and ivory ring, wrapped by a coral cartouche of interlaced arabesques, and finished with pointed lobes that push out into the field like rays. Around it the ivory ground is filled edge to edge with an all-over vine scroll, thin dark stems curling into palmettes, split leaves, lotus heads and small serrated rosettes, each one outlined so cleanly that the curve of the line reads at arm's length. The composition is mirrored across both axes, which is exactly what a square demands and what makes it so difficult to draw. A narrow taupe guard band separates the field from a coral main border of alternating palmettes and framed flower heads, and a second taupe outer band repeats a smaller rosette and leaf sequence right up to the selvage. Ivory cotton fringe finishes both ends.

Ivory, Coral and the Colors In Between

The field is a warm ivory, closer to fresh cream than white, and it is the reason the rug feels light despite how densely it is patterned. Against it the main border reads as a soft coral red, a salmon-leaning tone rather than a blood red, cooled on both sides by taupe grey guard stripes that keep the frame from shouting. Inside the field the palette is quietly varied: navy and midnight blue in the flower centers, a lighter sky blue in the small buds, sage and leaf green through the stems and serrated leaves, camel and tan in the palmette petals, with touches of rose and aubergine. The silk is placed rather than scattered, lifting the medallion core, the pale petal outlines and parts of the vine so those passages shift between matte and bright as you walk around the rug. Nothing is faded, nothing has been chemically washed down.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, working to the Raj system, where the count is taken across a gereh of about 2.75 inches. At 40 Raj a rug is commercial, at 50 it is fine, and at 60 Raj, roughly 400 knots per square inch, it is collector grade: small enough knots to hold a true curved line, tight enough to keep the outlines crisp through decades of use. The back photograph shows that density plainly, with even rows, a firm cotton foundation and no sag anywhere in the handle. Blending silk into a wool pile at this count is a workshop decision, not a village one, and it is what separates the better Persian Tabriz rugs from the rest of the market.
