5'10" x 8'10" Oriental Rug | Lavar Floral Medallion Design | Black & Burgundy, New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug in the classic Lavar layout: a jet black field, a wine burgundy medallion and border, and an ivory frame that holds the whole composition together. The wool pile is clipped low and evenly, which is what lets the drawing stay legible at this scale, and the cotton fringe is still crisp and untouched. At 5'10" x 8'10" it sits squarely in the most useful 6x9 area rug footprint, large enough to anchor a seating group without swallowing the room. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuine hand-knotted work.

Design and Motifs

The Lavar layout is one of the most demanding floral formulas in the traditional repertoire, and this weaver has kept it disciplined. A lobed central medallion sits dead center, filled with a rosette core, a ring of open roses and small serrated leaves, with a pendant finial reaching toward each end. Around it the black field is covered edge to edge with an all over vine system: thin scrolling stems carrying roses, buds, tulip heads and split palmettes, all drawn in curved line rather than angular village shorthand. The 4 corners carry large burgundy spandrels with bold paisley style palmettes. The main border runs a repeating cartouche and rosette chain between narrow ivory guard bands, and the corners resolve cleanly, which is the first place a sloppy cartoon gives itself away.

A Black Field with Burgundy, Green and Ivory

Black is the ground color and it is a true deep black, not a very dark navy, which makes every other tone in the rug read louder than it would on a red field. The florals scattered across it are salmon pink, dusty rose, soft apricot, pale gold and buttery cream, with olive and forest green leaves threading between them. The medallion, the 4 spandrels and the main border are a deep wine burgundy, cooled by patches of muted sage and moss green inside the border cartouches. An ivory guard band separates field from border and repeats again at the outer edge, giving the rug a bright outline on a dark floor. The wool takes light well, so the pinks and creams lift and the black recedes.

Hand-Knotted in China: Weave and Quality

Made in China and hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, this piece comes out of the workshop tradition that specializes in fine floral city designs at high knot density. That density is the whole point here: a Lavar cartoon with vines this thin and rosettes this small cannot be executed on a coarse weave, and the close-up photographs show tight, uniform knotting with clean color breaks and no blurring where one tone meets the next. The pile is good quality sheep wool, sheared low for definition, with the faint luster that comes from well washed fleece rather than any added fiber. The selvedges are firm, the ends are secured, and as a brand new rug it has its full pile height and years of wear still ahead of it.
