8'10" x 11'9" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Burgundy & Black Medallion | Dense Hand-Knotted Wool, New
This is a heavy, tightly packed Jaipur weave at 8'10" x 11'9", new and never laid on a floor, so the pile still stands straight and the ends and sides are untouched. Fold the corner back, as in the photographs, and the reason for the weight becomes obvious: rows of small, even knots on a cotton foundation, with enough density that the drawing on the reverse is almost as legible as the drawing on the face. It sits squarely in the standard 9x12 rugs footprint that most formal rooms are built around. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The layout is a classical medallion composition handled with unusual restraint. A black lozenge medallion holds the center, filled with ivory palmettes and curling vine, and finished top and bottom with small shield pendants. Around it, pale strapwork draws a set of stepped panels and lobed arches across the burgundy field, so the eye reads architecture first and flowers second. At each of the 4 corners and along both long sides, large ivory cartouches open up like windows, each one packed with a flowering vase and a lattice of tiny blossoms. The main border runs on a black ground with alternating palmettes and rosettes, framed by narrow rose and salmon guard stripes and a fine outer meander. Nothing in the drawing is rushed; the curved lines stay curved, which is only possible at this knot count.
A Burgundy, Black and Ivory Palette
The field is a deep wine burgundy that shifts with the light, reading close to oxblood in the overhead shots and nearly black-red where the pile lies away from the camera. Against it, the black medallion and black main border give the rug its backbone and keep the composition from turning soft. The secondary colors do the real work: muted sage and olive green in the leaves and strapwork, warm ivory and pale gold in the cartouches and palmettes, and a dusty rose to salmon tone in the guard stripes and smaller flower heads. Small touches of soft blue and pale gray appear inside individual blossoms when you look closely. The wool takes light well, so the surface has a quiet sheen rather than a flat matte finish, and the ivory cotton fringe at both ends is clean and full.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted work at this standard in volume, and today India makes most of the world's genuinely good contemporary hand-knotted rugs. The better Jaipur workshops weave from detailed cartoons in the classical tradition, use hand-spun wool with a high lanolin content, and beat the weft down hard, which is exactly what this piece shows in the fold and the rolled-edge photographs. If you want the broader background on how an Oriental rug is classified by origin and weave, the guide is worth 5 minutes. The practical point here is simple: a dense, fine weave in a 9x12 room size means the drawing holds its detail and the rug will take decades of traffic without flattening.
