This is a new, never used 9' x 12' hand-knotted rug woven in Jaipur, India, in the classical Tabriz manner: burgundy and taupe compartments locked together across the field, framed by a wide ivory border of scrolling vines. Wool pile on a cotton foundation, with the clean, crisp drawing and tight handle you can see in the close-up photographs. Jaipur is the reason this level of workmanship still exists at a sane price, and as an Oriental rug it sits comfortably with traditional and transitional furniture alike. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted, and in 9 x 12 area rugs this is the size that anchors a full seating group or an 8 seat dining table.

Design and Motifs

The field is a compartment layout: large octagons in deep burgundy alternating with taupe panels, each one filled with its own small garden of blossoms, curling leaves and slender vines. Four of the octagons carry a stepped ivory diamond at center, while the taupe compartments hold an 8 petal rosette worked in sage and cream, so the eye reads a repeating grid rather than a single medallion. Between the panels, angular cartouches fill every gap with more flowerheads, which is what gives this all-over design its density. The main border runs a procession of large palmettes and serrated acanthus leaves on ivory, bracketed by taupe guard bands of small repeating florets, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid motif, which is a fair test of a weaver's drawing.

A Burgundy, Ivory and Green Color Story

Burgundy carries the rug: a dark wine red, closer to claret than to tomato, deep enough to read almost aubergine where the pile leans away from the light. It is set against a soft mocha taupe that keeps the field from going heavy, and the two tones trade places panel by panel across the whole 12 foot length. The border is a warm ivory, not stark white, with a faint cream to oatmeal shift you can see along the fringe end. Sage and olive greens do the work in the foliage, cooled here and there with a pale celadon, and small touches of antique gold and old rose appear in the blossoms. The wool has a light natural sheen, so from one end the burgundy looks velvety and from the other it lifts toward garnet.

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a straightforward example of why: a demanding curvilinear cartoon executed with even knotting, accurate corners and clipped, level pile. The back photograph shows the knot nodes running in tidy rows with the cotton warps turning out into a hand-tied fringe, and the burgundy selvage is wrapped tight along both edges. Wool this dense and this evenly sheared holds a traditional pattern crisply for decades under real foot traffic, and because the rug is new and never used, the pile is at full height with no crushing, no low spots and no repairs.
