This 12' x 15' rug covers 180 square feet, which puts it firmly in the category of oversize hand-knotted rugs that get bought for one specific room and then stay there for decades. The pile is wool with silk worked into the flowers and scrollwork, knotted on a cotton foundation, and the piece has never been laid in a home: the pile still stands upright, the burgundy is unbroken, and the cotton fringe is full and evenly tied on both ends. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted, hand-finished rug rather than a machine-made reproduction.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Tabriz formula: one large round medallion, 4 matching corner spandrels, and an all-over vine field connecting the two. The medallion is an ivory disc built in concentric rings, with a soft taupe center holding a small radiating rosette and a ring of rose and pale blue blossoms around it. A shield shaped ivory pendant drops from the top and bottom of the medallion, each one carrying a single rose head. Across the burgundy field the weaver has run a continuous lattice of thin vines carrying rose palmettes, carnations, tulip buds and serrated green leaves, all of it mirrored top to bottom and side to side. The spandrels are drawn in the same floral language but on a pale ground, with caramel colored arabesque scrolls curling back on themselves at the inner edge. The main border is ivory with alternating rose palmettes and bouquets, framed by 4 narrow guard stripes of small rosettes and running vine.

Colors: Deep Burgundy, Ivory and Sage

The field is a deep burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and because the wool takes light differently across the width it reads almost black in the shaded photographs and glows a clear claret where the light hits it straight on. Against that ground the flowers are worked in salmon, dusty rose and true pink, with ivory and cream highlights on the petal tips where the silk sits, and the leaves and calyxes are a muted sage to olive green. The spandrels and the wide inner guard stripe are a soft greige taupe that cools the whole composition down, and the main border is a warm buttery ivory. Small accents of pale sky blue at the rosette centers, caramel gold in the scrollwork, and deep navy dots in the guard stripes keep the palette from going flat. The outer selvage and the narrow band outside the border are burgundy again, which closes the design cleanly against a light floor.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, on workshop looms that weave the fine floral medallion designs associated with the Tabriz school to a high standard, and it is an Oriental rug in the correct sense of that term: hand-knotted, wool and silk pile, cotton warp and weft, finished by hand at the ends and sides. The weave is tight enough to hold the curved line, which is the real test of this design, and you can see it in the unbroken outline of the medallion and in the thin vine stems that never break into steps. Silk is used selectively rather than everywhere, concentrated in the flower heads and the arabesques so those elements sit slightly higher and catch light against the matte wool ground. The back shows even, fine knotting with no crowding at the ends, the pile has good height for a rug of this fineness, and the weight of a 12 by 15 in this construction is exactly what you want underfoot in a large formal room.
