This is a finely knotted wool and silk Oriental rug drawn in the classic Tabriz manner, woven entirely by hand on a cotton foundation and never put down in a home. At 8'9" x 11'10" it falls squarely in the 9x12 area rug range that most living and dining rooms are built around, with enough length to carry a full seating group or a table with all chairs pulled back. The pile is short, tightly packed and clipped low, which is what allows the drawing to stay this crisp: single-stem flowers, tiny buds and curling leaves are legible right down to the last knot. Silk is used selectively through the flower heads and vine work, so the surface shifts from matte to bright as you walk around it. Design and Motifs

The composition is a formal medallion and corner layout. At the center sits an 8 point star rosette in ivory and pale sage, ringed by a burgundy cartouche filled with full-blown roses, then by a lobed halo of blossoms that radiates outward in concentric rings. Slim pendants run off the medallion toward each end of the field, ending in small paisley-shaped finials. Around all of that the field is packed with an all-over flowering vine: rosettes, fan-shaped palmettes, tulips, buds and thin serrated leaves, mirrored across both axes so the drawing reads as one continuous garden rather than a repeat. The 4 corner spandrels are burgundy and carry large soft-green palmettes flanked by curling arabesque scrolls. The main border is ivory, wide, and alternates black-ground diamond rosettes with leafy cartouches, and it is framed on both sides by narrow floral guard bands that hold the whole layout together.

A Black Field with Burgundy, Beige and Green

The field is a deep, near-ink black, and it is the reason this rug looks the way it does: every light color placed on it gains contrast. Against that ground the weavers set beige, cream and ivory blossoms, soft rose pink roses, warm gold and saffron flower heads, and muted sage to hunter green leaves. The burgundy is a rich oxblood rather than a bright red, and it does the structural work, holding the medallion cartouche, the 4 spandrels and the outer field edge. The main border flips the balance completely: an ivory to beige ground with burgundy and green figures, which frames the dark center and keeps the rug from reading heavy. The silk highlights sit mostly in the pinks and creams, so those flowers pick up light and appear to float above the black. In a room this reads as a dark, formal, jewel-toned rug that anchors pale walls and light upholstery.

Woven in China to a Tabriz Drawing

This piece was hand-knotted in China, in a workshop tradition that has spent decades reproducing the great classical medallion layouts at a very high knot count. The Tabriz drawing is one of the most demanding of them, because a curved line only stays a curve when there are enough knots per square inch to describe it, and the photographs of the medallion and the corner show that the workshop had them. The wool is spun fine and clipped close, the silk is used as accent rather than filler, and the reverse of the rug shows even, disciplined rows of knots on a cotton warp with a hand-tied fringe finishing both ends. Selvedges are neat and tight, the corners lie square, and the rug is in perfect condition with full pile, never walked on. For a buyer who wants the formality of a classical medallion design at this scale, in a genuinely hand-knotted wool and silk weave, it is a lot of rug for the money.
