8'9" x 11'8" Wool & Silk Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Tabriz Design | Burgundy & Black

This 8'9" x 11'8" hand-knotted piece is a fine wool and silk Oriental rug woven in China to a classic Tabriz drawing, and it has never been used. The pile is dense and low, cut evenly so that the silk highlights catch the light against the matte wool, and the handle is firm rather than floppy, which is what you want in a room-size rug that will take furniture. Selvedges are tight, the ends finish in hand-tied ivory fringe, and the back carries the even, fine grain visible in the ruler photograph. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a true all-over floral design, built from thin vine scrolls that wander the full length of the rug and carry open palmettes, layered rosettes, small carnation heads, buds and serrated leaves at every turn. Tiny lance leaves and 4 petal blossoms fill the gaps between the vines, so the surface never goes empty and the eye keeps moving. The drawing is mirrored on the long axis, which gives the pattern its order without making it stiff. The field is framed by a triple border system: a wide black main border with big palmettes and curling arabesques, flanked by ivory guard stripes running a delicate meander of small flower heads, and then a narrow outer stripe that closes the whole composition. Corner resolutions in the main border are drawn properly rather than cut off, which is the detail that separates a workshop draft from a hurried one.

Color

The field is a deep wine burgundy that reads almost black-cherry in low light and warms toward oxblood under a lamp, and it is the anchor for everything else. Against it the florals come up in ivory, cream and bone, with a strong run of peach, salmon and dusty rose in the larger palmettes, and soft sage to olive green in the leaves and stems. Small touches of slate blue and gold sit inside a few flower centers, and the silk in those accents gives them a lift the surrounding wool does not have. The main border is near-black, which pushes the burgundy field forward and makes the ivory guard stripes read as clean bright lines on both sides. The overall effect is formal and warm at the same time: a jewel-tone rug for a room with dark wood, cream walls or a burgundy and black scheme, rather than a washed-out decorator neutral.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the tradition of workshops that took their cartoons from the great Tabriz ateliers and wove them on cotton foundations with wool and silk pile. The Tabriz name here describes the design language, the curved vine, the layered palmette and the multiple border frame, and the weave is fine enough to carry that curvature without the lines going blocky. The wool is well spun and lustrous, the silk is used as highlight rather than filler, and the knotting is consistent from end to end with no bands or pulls. At 8'9" x 11'8" it falls into the standard 9x12 rug footprint, the size that sits under a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled back, and being brand new it has the full pile height still ahead of it.
