8'1" x 10'5" Oriental Rug | Tabriz Design Floral Medallion | Black & Ivory, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Pakistan to a classic Tabriz cartoon, with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and a full, even clip that shows every line of the drawing. The ivory field carries a layered central medallion inside a deep black quatrefoil frame, and the whole piece reads formal without reading heavy, because the palette stays in soft pastels against the black. At 8'1" x 10'5" it sits in the most useful room size in the catalog, large enough to hold a seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity that records the size, the materials and the weave.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small rectangular medallion built in layers: a fine rosette core, radiating leaf and teardrop forms, then a band of coral and cream rays like the teeth of a comb, ringed again by a beaded outline. From there the ivory field opens into wide curling acanthus scrolls, split palmettes and small naturalistic flower sprays, all drawn on the curve in the Tabriz manner rather than in village angles. A black quatrefoil surround wraps the field with dense arabesque and feathered leafwork, and at the head and foot of that frame sits a crowned vase motif flanked by tulips and scrolling stems, repeated at all 4 corners as spandrel work. The main ivory border runs flowering sprays between paired guard stripes of oval bead forms, with a stepped meander stripe at the outermost edge and a black outer band that squares off the whole composition.

The Color Palette: Ivory, Black and Soft Pastels

The field and the main border are a warm ivory that leans toward cream and light sand under lamplight, and the contrast comes from a true black used for the quatrefoil frame, the outer band and the selvage. Inside those two anchors the weaver worked almost entirely in pastels: sage and moss green in the leaves, aqua and pale turquoise in the scroll outlines, rose pink and dusty coral in the blossoms, lilac and mauve in the medallion outline and the pendant panels, with slate blue in the crowned vase motifs. Small points of deep burgundy and dark garnet sit in the flower centers and act as punctuation across the ivory ground, and pale gold picks out the ray band around the medallion. It is a light, quiet colorway that works over pale oak, limestone or grey plank without fighting the floor, while the black keeps the outline crisp from across the room.

Woven in Pakistan to a Tabriz Cartoon

Pakistan is one of the few places still producing hand-knotted room-size rugs at this level of drawing, and its workshops have long worked from classic Persian city cartoons, the Tabriz medallion among them. Knot by knot, the weaver follows a squared drawing, and the test of the work is whether the curved line stays curved: here the scrolls close cleanly, the beaded outlines hold their spacing, and the tiny ray band at the medallion stays even on both sides, which only happens when the knot count supports the detail. The wool is springy and takes a clean clip, the cotton foundation keeps the rug flat and square, and the piece has never been laid in a home. If you are comparing formats, it belongs with our other 8x10 Oriental rugs, and if the terminology is new to you, our guide on the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs explains where a piece like this sits.
