5'8" x 8'9" Sino Tabriz Wool and Silk Rug | Ivory All-Over Floral | Approx. 200 KPSI
A pale ivory ground this clean, drawn this tightly, is not easy to find in a room size. This 5'8" x 8'9" Sino Tabriz is a workshop weave in fine wool with silk used through the flower heads and stems, knotted at approximately 200 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation. It is brand new, never laid in a home, with a full even pile and crisp hand-tied fringe at both ends. As a genuine hand-knotted piece it ships with a certificate of authenticity, and at 6 x 9 it reads as a true seating-area size that anchors a sofa and two chairs without crowding the walk space, as the styled photograph shows.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field is a continuous all-over floral lattice of thin curving vines that mirror across both the long and short axes, so the drawing repeats in perfect symmetry with only a small rosette marking the exact center. Hung on the vines are rounded palmettes, layered rosettes, half-open buds and long curled sickle leaves, each one shaded through three or four tones rather than filled flat. The main border carries a run of brown scrolling cartouches, each cradling an ivory and rose blossom, alternated with upright floral sprays. Four narrow guard stripes of small connected flowers frame it on either side, and the corners resolve cleanly, which is the first thing to check on an all-over design of this density.
The Ivory, Tan, Green and Burgundy Palette
The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it stays open enough that the pattern never feels heavy. Against it the vines run in a soft rose-tan, the leaves in olive, sage and a deep forest green, and the flower heads in burgundy, rust, copper and apricot with small hits of slate blue, gold and pale pink at the centers. The main border shifts to a light salmon tan outlined in dark brown, which gives the rug a visible frame from across a room. Where the silk sits in the pile it catches the light and reads a half shade brighter than the wool around it, so the blossoms lift off the ground as you move past. It is a neutral rug at a distance and a colorful one up close.
Sino Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Sino Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Chinese workshop weaving to the Tabriz drawing tradition, and this is honest hand-knotted work, made in China on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile. At roughly 200 knots per square inch the grid is fine enough to hold a true curved line, which is what this style demands, and the back shown in the fold photo is tight and regular with no loose or crowded passages. The pile has been sheared low and even so the outlines stay sharp, and the selvedges and fringes are finished by hand. If you are comparing this kind of weave with other traditions, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from a broader Oriental rug is worth reading, and you can see how this piece sits against our other 6 x 9 area rugs.
