6' x 10' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory All Over Floral in Wool & Silk | 400 KPSI
This 6' x 10' Persian Tabriz was woven in the 2000's at roughly 400 knots per square inch, the 60 Raj grade that Tabriz workshops reserve for their better commissions. The pile is fine wool carrying wool and silk highlights, which is why the pink and blue flowerheads catch light differently from the ivory ground around them. The knotting is tight enough that the drawing stays crisp at arm's length and at floor level, the selvedges are firm, the fringes full and even, and the rug is in perfect condition with no wear anywhere in the pile. It ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials, knot count and size.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic all over floral design rather than a single dominant medallion, though a small 8 petal rosette sits dead center as an anchor point. From it the vine work radiates in four directions, mirrored on both axes, linking large serrated palmettes, lotus blossoms, tulip heads and curled saz leaves. The drawing is fully curvilinear, which is the test of a fine Tabriz: every stem bends smoothly at this knot count instead of stepping. The main border runs a continuous arabesque with alternating floral cartouches and small rosettes, framed by a narrow ivory vine guard on each side and finished with a fine brick red sawtooth edge. Four corners resolve the border pattern cleanly, a detail that separates workshop weaving from village work.
Color Palette
The ground is a warm ivory with a faint cream cast, and it is the quietest part of the rug, which lets the flowers do the work. The main border is a soft salmon pink, slightly dusty rather than candy bright, and it repeats inside the field in the vines and in the outer petals of the larger palmettes. Deeper rose, raspberry and plum appear in the flower centers, with brick red used sparingly in the sawtooth guard stripes and the outermost edge. Cool tones balance the warmth: powder blue and navy in the petal tips and small buds, forest green and olive in the leaves, and touches of gold and camel in the smaller rosettes. Charcoal outlining gives each motif definition against the pale ground. The overall reading in daylight is ivory and blush pink with jewel colored detail.
Tabriz Origin and Weave
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the country's most commercially serious weaving city for centuries, with a workshop system built around master designers and named ateliers. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 inches: 40 Raj is ordinary commercial goods, 50 Raj is fine, and 60 Raj, the grade of this piece, is where collectors start paying attention. That density is what allows the curved vine and the small petal detail seen here. Tabriz weavers work on a cotton foundation with a tightly packed wool pile, adding silk only where it earns its keep in highlights, and the result is a rug that reads as refined but is still built for a floor that gets used.
